Rovagug

The Rough Beast

Many have wondered what the purpose of the magical barriers around Iotelos were for. What is out there that requires such powerful protection? Devils, Demons, Fey, Monstrosities and others are powerful and dangerous, but they can be dealt with. What is left that can't be solved with something that already exists. Rovagug is the answer to that question. An extraplanar beast of destruction, his arrival spelled the demise of homes and livelihoods. If it wasn't for a small group of gods, led by Sarenrae, he would have quickly devoured the world.

Appearance

Rovagug has the appearance of a gargantuan armored worm. Several legs along the length of his body help him move at a frightening pace. He has several rows of sharp teeth inside of his maw, and a ring of eyes around his head allows him unparalleled vision. If it were possible to get close to him, you would see a large array of broken weapons jutting harmlessly from his carapace. From spears to swords to axes, each tell a story of a failed attempt to stop the Beast. Dents and gouges show that even larger creatures failed to stop Rovagug's endless journey of destruction.

History

Rovagug first came to Iotelos soon after the Arcanaclysm. From there he rampaged up and down the new nations of Rahma and Izmir. It took the combined effort of three goddesses, Sarenrae, Shelyn and Desna, to stop his march. Even they though could not completely stop him, and so they locked him deep into the crust, deep enough that the possibility of him ever getting out was slim. This did not stop him from affecting the world above. Many natural disasters, such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are attributed to him thrashing and wriggling within the earth, attempting to break free.   After Rovagug had been imprisoned, and planar travel had been mastered, a few scholars made a journey to the plane believed to be Rovagug's origin. There they only found a flat plain, filled with stone, dust, and wind. They believed that with the proper time and resources something could be excavated, and the previous inhabitants could be studied. A few more expeditions have been made, but very little has been found.

Followers

Rovagug doesn't have many followers. Even those that he does have, he doesn't pay much attention to. This drives his followers to commit more and more destructive acts, in order to gain his attention. Some even seek to release him from his prison back onto Iotelos.

Tenets of Faith

Edicts
  • Destroy all things
  • Free Rovagug from his prison
Anathema
  • Create something new
  • Let material ties restrain you
  • Torture a victim or otherwise delay its destruction

Priesthood

What would be considered priests of Rovagug are no more than bandit captains and warlords. His temples are no more than natural structures like caverns, canyons, and pits. Priesthood isn't an honor bestowed upon a believer, but a title to be earnt through blood and death.

Worship

Followers of Rovagug worship him through their destructive actions. Destroying symbols of Sarenrae are the easiest for them to complete, but most seek better ways to appease him. Some will attempt to sabotage or destroy buildings or other public structures. Others will serve in a bandit horde, destroying trade caravans and robbing those that come past.    Offerings
Material possessions are not offered to Rovagug. Instead, they may take their possessions and destroy them, rendering them completely useless and unfixable to show their devotion. Some will offer their service in a bandit group or as a sword for hire, even if their leader isn't a follower. In this a followers main motivation is destruction, so they may forgo any spoils to show true loyalty to Rovagug.

Granted Divine Powers

Quests

Quests aren't set by Rovagug. Either the follower will choose their own quest or goal, or it will be chosen for them, if they are part of group. Generally these quests have the goal of some sort of destruction. It may be the destruction of a piece of art or a statue, to building, or some sort of critical infrastructure such as a bridge or road.
