A Promise Once Kept
The town was silent and still. Not a single breeze passed by nor did a single person walk the streets. The full moon hung over Greenhaven, bathing it in its haunting light. A foul smell wafted through the air. It covered the entire town, it filled every nook and cranny, from the entrance to the Ealdorman’s hall.
Cedric was in his position on the edge of the town and the wilderness. It was a boring eve so far and he fought to stay awake, propping himself up with his spear. As he shook himself back to consciousness a sharp pain rang throughout his body. He looked down and found a knife in his belly that a second ago had not been there. Red eyes opened and stood in front of him now. A beast formed around those red eyes. Its long black hair draped over its broad shoulders. Its skin was a pale gray, and its fangs sharp with crusted blood on them. Its jawline sharp, and its cheekbones accentuated, and clean shaven. He wore pitch-black armor with a red cape. The beast leand in, “Sweet dreams,” it said. With that Cedric fell dead on the ground.
A swarm of screeching bats whooshed out from the trees and around the monster. Each of the furry nasty bats morphed into a beast of similar appearance, they were a small army.
“Lord Vlad!” One of them yelled. “What would you have us do?”
The monster grinned, “Find the Black Dagger and bring him to me alive. As for the rest of the herd, you can feast as you please!”
The swarm of vampires bolted into the town and began raising hell. They went into homes and sunk their teeth into sleeping children, they butchered husbands and wives in their sleep. Screams of the innocent covered the town now. Vlad walked slowly through the dirt street, looking at his reflection in his sword.
The screams of his people woke Germand. He left his wife in their bed, grabbed a knife and his sword and ran outside to face whatever threat awaited him. People were being drug out of their houses and slaughtered. The vampire army showerd in the blood flying through the air and cheered. Vlad was at Germand’s hall waiting. He smiled a most terrible smile when he saw him.
“Dagger,” Vlad said with a bow. “Lovely weather is it not? I love nights like these”
Germand went pale and his heart nearly popped out his chest. “You.”
Vlad raised his blade, “I made a promise. It’s time to finish our conversation.”
With that the vampire lord charged for the Dagger. Germand jumped to the side and rolled. He grabbed his kitchen knife and hurled it at Vlad. The blade stuck into the vampire’s chest. Vlad looked down slowly, grabbed the knife, and removed it. He was not amused. Vlad ran and grabbed Germand by the neck and slammed him into the dirt! Vlad lifted his sword over the Dagger’s chest ready to plunge it down but Germand threw his hand up and a torrent of wind sent Vlad flying across the street! Germand got up and was ready to continue.
Upon making contact with the ground Vlad turned into black smoke and whizzed around the air. He swarmed around the Dagger, who was swinging his sword around to no effect. A woman screamed.
“Germand!” yelled a small framed bleach blonde woman yelled from the hall threshold.
The smoke vanished and the Dagger could see his wife. “Fiona no! Run!” he yelled, but it was too late.
The smoke flew behind Fiona and turned back into the Blood-Lord Vlad-The Eternal. The beast hissed and ran his claw into the woman's back, he struck so hard it broke her spine. He thrust his fangs into her neck and feasted. Germand watched as the life in his wife’s body vanished. Her green eyes turned white and her fair skin turned to a rotten grey, her skin shrunk so much you could see her skeleton and clumps of her hair fell out.
Vlad wiped the blood off his face with his sleeve and grimaced. “A foul taste. I tend to avoid the weak and sickly cattle.”
Germand roared and rushed the beast with no fear! He swung his iron sword at Vlad’s face! The vampire raised his arm and the blade sunk into his blade gauntlet. Vlad took his other hand and rammed it into the Dagger. Germand bent over and began choking. Vlad raised his hand slowly and the Dagger could no longer move. His muscles tightened up and began crushing him. Vlad raised the Dagger into the air and twirled him around like a doll. He grabbed his sword and approached. He lifted himself into the air to meet Germand face to face.
“I promised you Dagger, and I always keep my word. Do you have any last ones?”
Germand grimaced, “You won’t live another year past this one! My son will find you and you will know death!”
“You can’t kill what was never alive.” Vlad pushed his sword into Germand heart slowly, watching the blood spurt out from his chest. The vampire pulled the sword out and watched Germand’s body slam back into the dirt. He raised his sword high and roared! He had won, for now.
