Forest's Edge

Refuge on the Edge of Desolation

The forest thins as the trees turn into the piled snow of the tundra, the warm wind gaining a freezing chill. Small huts and buildings stand against the stark white, on the edge of desolation, but not wholly removed from the civilization hidden in the trees. While little more than a hamlet of animals and a handful of people, this village seemed like an oasis in the middle of nothingness.   Little seems to go on in this tiny place, nothing moves other than the wind and the animals that follow worn paths around the handful of buildings that a small number of people call home. Over the decades, it seems like nothing has changed, nothing new has come here, but the people here prefer it that way. Calm and nothingness means safety, a sanctuary when danger and more lurk just past the snow-covered hills.   Forest’s Edge is aptly named, a grouping of houses and buildings on the very edge of the Elven Forest, right on the edge of the Neither Tundra. Nowadays, life is slow here, moving at a snail's pace unless some traveler wanders in or the wrong type of footprints are glimpsed in the snow outside of town. For those that do stumble into the sleepy town, it is a place to slow down, to stop and regather oneself. A two-day ride might get you somewhere if you're lucky, but after a hard day's ride, the town on the edge seems to be divine intervention.

Demographics

Much like many of the other villages and hamlets that populate the Northern Outposts, the population of Forest's Edge is rather small and quite rural, requiring those that live these to be self-sustaining, including through the long winter months. This village is even further away from safety than others, allowing for a special measure of intervention by the Knights of Yggdrasil.   Most inhabitants of the village are Elves, but there is also a number of Half-Elves that live in Forest's Edge, although most of the Half-Elves are Paladins of the Knights of Yggdrasil. Not all in the village have ties to the Order, but there is a heavy reliance on the Paladins for the overall safety of the village.

Tourism

One might think that due to the location of Forest's Edge that visitors would be few and far between, but this was far from the case. The village's location on the border between the Neither Tundra and the Elven Forest and the distance between it and the next village being two or more days made Forest's Edge a necessary stop for a variety of travelers looking to fill their bellies and bags before they continued on the next leg of their journey.   When travelers do arrive in the village, the locals may put together a small feast for those who have just arrived. Items that may be needed for travel will be brought into the building that serves as a town hall and a small market will open after the travelers have eaten their fill. Travelers will also be given rooms in the town hall as the village is not large enough to have an inn.
Snow Fences
So far to the north, snow fences are common to keep the Neither Tundra from encroaching farther south than necessary. Villages like Forest's Edge have more robust snow fences than elsewhere.

I really like the detail that the village doesn't have an inn so travellers are given rooms in the town hall. Such a nice little detail.
