Hummingbirds

Long Beak Pollinators

Wings beat impossibly faster, moving from flower to flower, finding nectar with their long beaks. Eventually, the wings slow as the creature settles down on a stem, taking a moment’s break from their continual movement. Minutes of quiet pass before the creature moves again, wings beating in a steady rhythm, a hum following them wherever they go. Unlike those birds that survive on flesh and insects, this is a coveted existence, one seemingly of leisure and sugar just on the tip of the tongue.   Hummingbirds are found scattered throughout Isekai, but often only in areas that offer warm climates and plenty of flowers. Their small size brings them some measure of safety and their quick speeds allow them to move with ease. These birds are the smallest in the world, often said to look like ghosts as they move so quickly and effortlessly through the air. Their long peaks and love for nectar and flowers make them wonderful pollinators that make areas like the Little Greenwood thrive.   Few ever truly cross paths with Hummingbirds as these creatures prefer to hide and move quickly. One traveling might hear a soft hum as wings pass by but little more. These small birds tend not to tempt fate, to move in patterns that keep them the safest from other creatures that might see these colorful birds as little more than a snack. Even so, these creatures are known for their lackadaisical lifestyles that the Trocha often dabble in.

Basic Information

Muted Colors
Many often think that Hummingbirds are all brightly colored, but this is far from the truth. In some places, certain varieties of Hummingbirds are more muted in color so that they can easily blend in with their surroundings.

Anatomy

Hummingbirds are extremely small birds, often ranging from three to ten inches from beak to tail. These birds often weigh less than a pound, even those Hummingbirds that are considered to be extremely large for the species. Of all bird species, the size and weight of Hummingbirds vary the greatest.   These birds get their name from the humming sound that is created by the beat of their wings, which flap much faster than other creatures. The rate of wing beats varies from about twelve beats a second in the largest species to eighty beats a second in the smallest Hummingbirds.   Hummingbirds are special in that they do not migrate with the seasons and when food is scarce, they can enter a state similar to hibernation that allows them to slow their metabolic rate to conserve energy.   It is believed that Hummingbirds are one of the oldest bird species in Isekai, arriving in the world shortly after the creation of the Ancient Fey. Some say that Lycana was influenced by her children to create these colorful birds with incredible wings.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Hummingbirds prefer to live in the more temperate and tropical locations of the world, often staying away from areas where the temperature fluctuates widely throughout the year. On the Northern Contintent, these birds are found most commonly in the Little Greenwood where they serve as pollinators that aid in the growth of the special flora.   The further south one travels, the more common these birds are. Areas of the Zóni and the warmer parts of Nótios are coveted habitats of these birds as the temperature fluctuations are more stable. The tundras of the Southern Continent are the only places that these birds cannot be found south of the Zóni.
Hummingbird
Hummingbirds are the smallest birds in Isekai and are often considered the fastest creatures for their size. The wings of these creatures move so quickly that it is often difficult to see the wings.
