A translucent shield appears a second before the
Elf flies through the roaring
Dragon fire, moving across the battlefield to provide aid where necessary. Even after days of spells and fire, the carpet she rides upon is not even singed, its weaving as perfect as the day the academy received it from the Witch covens of the south. Through this battle, the tightly woven cloth has been both friend and protector, a shroud of safety as she casts her own spells into the fray.
From enchanted yarn to a highly enchanted item, Sorcerer Carpets were the first attempt at aerial warfare without wings.
Dragons and
Avians had taken to the skies for centuries on their wings when battles came to them, but the
Elves had hoped to find a way to match that prowess and set themselves above those who may dare to bring war to the people of the forest. Flying carpets were not unreasonable, but flying carpets that could withstand
Dragon fire were unheard of.
Years of development at the
Unending Scroll and testing by various parts of the
Bauxatehn were necessary to make these flying vehicles what they are today. Various enchantments from different colors of magic are imbued into all parts of the crafting and weaving practice, leaving an object that is so magical that it is difficult to separate the different layers of magic that create the whole.
Inner Workings
Sorcerer Carpets begin their lives as little more than the bark of the
Festival Redwoods that are found within the
Fairy King's Wood. Through the process of
Arcane Weaving, the bark is harvested by the
Lofted Tree Coven and slowly turned into small pieces of fabric that are inherently magical. This fabric is then exported to the
Academy of the Scroll for further enchanting.
Once received by the
Academy of the Scroll, the small pieces of fabric are then further woven together into larger carpets with other fibers that are either sourced outside the
Elven Kingdom or created within the
Unending Scroll. Rumors have been heard that
Topaz Spider Silk is utilized in this process to help further hold the enchantments for longer periods of time and through great duress.
Throughout the weaving process,
Mages of various colors will imbue enchantments into the fibers as well as
Rune Mages adding further spells as runes are sewn into the carpet. The true nature of the enchantments on Sorcerer Carpets is not shared outside of the highest echelons of the
Academy of the Scroll so as not to be spread to the general populace and used against the
Elves during wartime.
Impact
These items, while heavily used by the
Elves during the
Eldritch War and other conflicts, are often seen as fantastical creations by others. In their earliest days of use, these carpets were lauded as the greatest lie and misconception of the
Bauxatehn, and misinformation spread in order to unsettle the enemy. It wasn't until the carpets proved themselves against the fire of a
Red Dragon did people believed in the magical ability that had been turned into a flying vehicle.
I love this. I bet making them is so time consuming, though! :)
