Bridge (city)
The Derathaini trading city known as Bridge is one of the most unexpectedly beautiful places on the entire continent. What once was a small trading camp built beside a bridge that crossed high above the King river has become a unique, rather bohemian city that offers a unique sight unlike any other place in Isesda.
After being repeatedly destroyed by marauders from the southern Grey mountains, the entire city moved itself out onto the bridge itself. Suspended atop the canyon above the swift King river, the structure itself is a marvel of engineering. The bridge is strong enough to hold the entire city safely and has been designed so that both sides of the bridge could be retracted, leaving the entire city suspended by beams fit into the canyon walls. When the bridge is so retracted the city almost seems to float in the air.
But there's something more that makes Bridge something beyond a novel piece of engineering. The artistry of the city cannot be understated. Before the rebellion of Lestra, nearly all the imported goods from Raiven travelled down the King river and this led Derathaini artists to gather in Bridge to get earlier access to the imports. As the bridge was redesigned and enhanced by engineers the artists had their impact as well. The design of the city itself is light and beautiful, combining elegantly wrought metal and glass to make the city gleam in the daylight. This has created the incredible effect of multicolored light painting the entire canyon below with ever-shifting light in countless colors.
Demographics
As with most of Derathain, the population of Bridge is mostly human. Still, there are a smattering of non-Humans at any given time, mostly Goblinkin and the occassional Feykith.
Defences
The bridge from which the city takes its name is incredible piece of advanced engineering. When the sides of the bridge are retracted and the cables that carry individuals from the river below to the bridge itself are locked, it is nearly impossible to access the city without magical aid. Beyond this, the bridge is equipped with a number of mounted ballistae which are rarely used, but are well maintained to ensure protection.
This is all in sharp contrast to the bulk of the population who live with no defensive training or preparation. It is only through the paid, standing guard of the city that this gem on the river remains pristine.
