Reman Mariners
The Reman empire is an expansive place, yet a relative few leave their home island. The sometimes treacherous waters among the Reman islands, potential conflict with the Adventi, and the extended duration of trips to the larger trade partners frighten away most of the common people. While there are plenty of fishermen who remain near their home island and a few traders brave enough to maintain their own ships, the brave folk of the Mariners are the ones who spend their lives traveling Rema's seas. Part navy, part shipping service, and part seagoing caravan the Mariners are found throughout the islands and are frequent visitors to the ports of Derathain, Raiven, and even Aranel or Avalier.
The life of a Reman Mariner is dangerous and many die young to find a resting place beneath the waves, but those who live to middle or old age are masters of sea and sail. There is perhaps no force outside the Federation of Advent more adept at battle at sea and even in a conflict between the Mariners and the Adventi the outcome would be uncertain for any remotely even matchup. It is fortunate then that the Mariners tend to have very positive relations with peoples outside Reman control.
Where the Mariners do come into conflict is with pirates and in particular slave traders they encounter at sea. Indeed, any such ship who catches sight of a Mariner ship would do well to flee as fast as they can and hope they weren't spotted first. Unfortunately for the the Mariners favor small, very fast ships which allow them to overtake their targets and bring them to heel with their powerful cannons and magic. And most Mariner vessels do count at least one skilled mage among their ranks granting them preternatural speed, a resistance to the elements, and power to equal a ship of twice their size.
