Ciel Sickness

Leucocyte Elevation Sickness

About

Ciel Sickness is a condition that occurs in beings injected with the Magi-Pharmaceutical named Ciel. The range of reactions varies incredibly from being to being, given that the compound used is meant to edit one's immune system. Though there are common symptoms that span between versions of Ciel.

It is currently a very unknown condition, given that there are only a handful of beings in Isidoro that are currently afflicted with it.

A Necessary Evil?

Those who know of Ciel and its resulting sickness have strong opinions about it. There are only a small collection of Penumbra staff that are aware of the testing.

"Do I enjoy having this happen to people that offer themselves, their bodies, to magi-science? No!" The woman leaned back, taking a long drink from a wine glass, before speaking up again. "But with every mistake made, we learn. You fall down seven times, you get up eight. I will stand up tall."
— Its creator, Casina Grace
"I know it's supposed to help people but..." The employee shifted their weight, looking hesitant. "The side effects can get really bad. When does it stop being progress...? When does it become torture...?"
— Medical Wing Employee
"People have died testing this." A man in a lab coat scowled, eyes narrowing. "This better be one hell of a miracle drug, and soon. If you ask me..." He turned away, looking into a microscope. "We should have stopped the first time someone died."
— Science Wing Employee

Transmission & Vectors

Ciel Sickness is transmitted through an injection of any imperfect version of Ciel into the bloodstream. This is the only means of transmission for the disease, as it is not contagious and cannot be spread to other beings.

However, open wound contact which allows blood to blood transmission would possibly give the secondary recipient minor versions of symptoms. Blood donation would not, as white blood cells are removed from donated blood.

Causes

The condition begins a few minutes after injection, lasting over an hour for the onset of symptoms before stabilization occurs. There are no environmental factors to Ciel Sickness, given that Ciel is almost always administered in sterile lab conditions.

Symptoms

Symptoms vary from version to version, but symptoms are as follows from more common to rare:
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Sweating
  • Fainting
  • Body Tremors
  • Delirium/Confusion
  • Orifices Leaking Ciel

Not all persons will experience these symptoms. Some may experience unique symptoms, some may only experience a handful.

Treatment

There are no treatments for Ciel Sickness as it currently has no cure. Some impure versions of Ciel require subjects to inject doses of Mana infusions to stabilize their specific condition. Others may take pain killers or other sensation numbing narcotics.

However, this is simply a means to lessen the effect of the drug on their system, and will not remove the symptoms entirely.

Prognosis

Ciel Sickness at a Glance

    Injection
    General Feeling of Unease

    ~5 minutes After Injection
    Fever, Chills

    ~10 minutes After Injection
    Sweating, Confusion, Shakiness

    ~20 minutes After Injection
    Delirium, Body Tremors, Fainting

    ~30 minutes After injection
Ideally, heart rate decreases, symptoms ebb and eventually are replaced with fatigue that is cured after a long rest. Worse case the Ciel has triggered a reaction similar to an auto immune disease.

Sequela

Complications from Ciel Sickness include mental trauma such as: depression, anxiety, etc. Depending on the version of Ciel injected, chronic aches and pains may occur. Random destabilization of Ciel is also a risk factor.

However, if one can survive the complications and the initial injection, they are far more likely to avoid sickness in the future.

Prevention

There is no current prevention of Ciel Sickness, other than not being injected with the compound.

Nice clean layout, the internal strife is quite interesting, is there any public outcry about it though besides the employees? Nice article!

Thank you! There's not much public knowledge of the disease due to the fact that the item that causes the disease in the first place is actually a..what's the word...It's a secret from everybody! Well, mostly everyone : p
