Transfer Healing

That'll buff right out...

One has to wonder how this spell, or innate skill came to be. In my over 200 years as head Monarch of the Jade Spine Clan, I have only heard of 3 beings capable of this spell. An elf, a fae, and a single dragon. The Elf did not make it to adulthood, her altruism having her heal far beyond her means... You wanted to know more about the ability you are currently blessed with, do you not? Than cease your squirming and listen, child. If you wish to survive without becoming a scarred and hollow shell, you best pay my words heed. Morranna, Head Monarch of the Earth Dragon Jade Spine clan.

About

The spell/ability called "Transfer Healing" is classified as extremely rare, with less than 5 beings having the ability at birth within the same timeline. If not born into, Transfer Healing is an incredibly difficult branch of healing magic to learn, and especially challenging to use.   As the name of the spell hints, this ability allows the user to heal a variety of wounds by transferring the wound to themselves. It is heavily debated among the beings birthed into this power of whether it is either an incredible gift, or a harsh curse. Without careful training, the user can easily injure themselves and others by over-healing.

Risk and Rewards

As mentioned previously, there is heavy debate on the use of this spell. While it may seem like a simple branch-off from normal healing, it is fact anything but.   Many users of this spell have died by over extending their healing abilities. While bruises and scrapes may exchange in a blink of an eye to someone who knows this spell, a stab to the gut may end up being fatal for both parties if not healed and transferred correctly.   If the healer neglects internal damage and only heals the outer injury of the stab, the wounded could bleed out. If the being with the ability is not a fast healer, and takes on too strenuous an injury, they may crash, go into shock and die before being able to be treated themselves.   Some Transfer Healing using beings actually become so scarred and banged up from their healing that they are unable to properly heal with this method due to overwhelming scar tissue.

Effect

This spell is classified as a high-class healing spell. The caster uses their own body to heal the injured individual. To the unknowing, this spell appears to be someone taking away injuries via touch, and them reappearing on the healer.

Side/Secondary Effects

The Healer

The healer will now have the wounds they have just healed. As a result any body aches, pain, or other traumas from the injuries will be on their person. Depending on severity, they may need to see their own healer, or if they're a fast healing race, simply stabilize themselves.

The Healed

The healed individual will feel drained physically as the healer replaces the injured bio mass with their own. While the healer does replace the injured tissue and other problems, it still undergoes the natural healing process, just extremely accelerated. The rapid sensation of healing requires the previously wounded to take in fluids and carbs to keep themselves stable.

Manifestation

The way Transfer Healing appears is different from user to user, as their own mana colour will be visible when healing, casting a coloured glow over the affected area. Along with the wounds slowly disappearing and reappearing, one can often hear the sounds of setting bones. The scent of blood is incredibly common.

Discovery

If I have any guesses as to the discovery and primary uses of this spell, it would have to be likely used during wars and other intense combat. If your squads of healers are already spent, why not have them take the wounds and have the fighters leave as if nothing ever happened? Of course... That is just an assumption and requires more research. Scribblings found within a researcher's journal
Gestures & Ritual
To use Transfer Healing, all one must do is be in contact with the person being healed. Some casters like to place their hands as close to the wound as possible, but it varies from being to being.   Other than this small quirk, this spell is the same as any other.

That's a very unique idea. I would like to learn more about the ramifications of said stab in the stomach. Why could it kill both? And how is it possible to survive a possibly deadly injury as a healer who transfers it unot themselves?

In the case of a grievous wound with a lot of trauma, it is possible that the healed individual suffers from trauma the healer hadn't noticed and hadn't healed (eg. some trauma causing internal bleeding, and only the stab wound was healed, leaving them to bleed out inside themselves.) Or that, depending on how fast it's healed, there isn't enough energy/fluids etc and their recovery goes badly if they have secondary injuries.   For the healer, it's a matter of if their species is hardy enough to survive the expending of energy to heal the wounded, take the wound onto themselves and either heal it naturally by being stitched up, or by seeing a healer to them fix the wound they transferred. There's a lot that can go wrong with harsher injuries! But if it's a heartier species, such as a dragon or bloodkeeper, they may stand a chance to deal with the trauma. I hope that makes sense!

It does! Maybe add a sentence or two to the article about the first part? Because that was really confusing when I read it at first. But yeah, it is a great way to look at healing, and it says quite a bit about your cultures that somethi.ng like this was able to develop at all!

Thank you so much! I'll be sure to add something in to address the confusion, thank you for pointing it out!

Good article, saying as much as needed with little fluff, just as I like 'em. The ability's interesting, too.   I think there's one word to much in the second sentence of 'Risk and Rewards'. Also, it seems like this ability has more downsides than upsides and a lot of inconveniences. Not much to gain, for the healer, imho. If a wound is healed, there's still someone injured. Why should I take a wound, then go to the doctor to get it fixed, instead of bringing the wounded to the doctor in the first place? Still I could think of rare occasions, where this might be useful. I think, its a little bit unbalanced to have this rare ability, also be useful in rare occasions...

Thank you! Some parts I get proof-read but sometimes things slip by! While adding more information a previous comment mentioned I'll be sure to look that over, thank you!   As for the power basically being 1 pro and a bajillion cons, originally I only had one character with the ability, because I wanted to play with the stereotypical healer tropes. As I was writing her profile I thought this would be a good article to have/build some culture and ideas around the power itself.   Also with bigger injuries, they could always heal half and then have a proper healer fix the both of them, since it wlild be equally divided. But regardless it's a complicated thing and meant to be unrulely and a little bit cruel!   Thank you for the comment, I'll go do some edits now : )

Pretty cool idea. Why is it so rare exactly? Idk how magic works in your world. Are their any loop holes in the spell such as immortals using it which theoretically would either make more inmortals or maybe make it to where they don't worry about risks?

Dec 17, 2018 04:12 by Terry-Lynn L

I dont have a reason for why it's so rare, sorry! Unfortunately I don't have immortals in my setting, and all the spell does is transfer cells and such so it wouldnt transfer conditions such as immortality.

Maybe not lol thanjs fir getting back to me on cause i was really wondering.

Hi! Thought I would give back the love <3   That's an interesting take to healing magic! Or hurting magic too, I guess. Is there some kind of magic that allows the caster to "redirect" the target of a spell? Because that could be dangerous! Normally, when I read about magic, I think "oh, I would love to have this ability", but here... uuh, not thanks. Let the healers do their jobs, I'll keep my invisibility sneaking powers :P   The article is concise and complete, so it makes for a light and quick read. I would have liked more on the social perception of this ability, from the point of view of the healed and also from the general public.   This sentence is difficult to understand, maybe a typo somewhere? The healed individual will feel drained physically as the healer replaces their bio mass with their own, will still has to meld with their own body and accelerates their path to healing. (Secondary effects -> The healed)   Great job, see you around! :)

Oops, first, thank you for catching that. I wrote it half asleep. I have fixed it with:

The healed individual will feel drained physically as the healer replaces the injured bio mass with their own. While the healer does replace the injured tissue and other problems, it still undergoes the natural healing process, just extremely accelerated. The rapid sensation of healing requires the previously wounded to take in fluids and carbs to keep themselves stable.
I suppose you could redirect it, but it would be incredibly taxing on top of healing. I def wanted a look at the downsides of having magic in a world. Thank you for the comments and feedback, I did want to add more, but I got antsy and released it. More may happen in the future!

I like this idea of healing by transferring the injuries instead of just curing them - It provides a hard, physical limit on the capabilities of a healer. Is there anyone that's well known or famous for having this ability at any point in history?

  • 'will still has to meld with their own body and accelerates their path to healing' - This bit reads awkwardly; I'm not sure if there's an extra word that shouldn't be there or if you're missing some words.

Dec 17, 2018 02:00 by Terry-Lynn L

Thank you, Ondo pointed it out as well so I have edited it. Thats what happens when you write asleep! go ahead and take a peek now if you'd like!   I'm not sure if there is! This ability exists mostly because of a secondary character, and I wanted to add an article to explain it in more depth instead of adding it just to her article. Maybe in the future!

Dec 27, 2018 19:33 by Sierra Brown

I'm curious who this secondary character is. Is the article published yet? :d

Dec 28, 2018 03:42 by Terry-Lynn L

No but I'm aiming to have her done at some point tomorrow; I can ping you in the discord if you'd like! : )

Very interesting idea, and it's very well-presented here. I like that line you used at the top, made me chuckle. I especially like that you went into detail about the possible consequences of this kind of spell. Keep up the good work!

Thank you! I like to mix humor and seriousness when I can. Sometimes I like the subheading to compliment it, or input some humor if I feel it might be needed.
