Oru is a fifth generation miner. Her family members have worked the diamond mines, earning a disproportionately low risk to reward wage for years. Whilst Oru was no different from her grandparents, father, mother and siblings, commencing work years before adulthood, her gregarious nature was illsuited to perfoming menial tasks, isolated, for long periods of time. She found herself spending as much time as she could with Mmalesa, the Zenj mining camp herbalist, until suddenly at the age of 16 found herself stepping into that role after Mmalesa was killed in a cave in. Oru served in this role for a number of years, before deciding she wanted more than tending to, or organising the burials of miner after miner.
She travelled to Senghor, the Caldaru trading port on the western end of the peninsula known as the Kaavu lands. Here she earned a living for a brief time, helping to run an affordable makeshift hospital in the bazaar situated close to the city docks.

She revelled in the job, enjoying the company of her employer, Salamah Benchemsi, to the point where the two became, briefly, romantically linked. But indiscretions on the part of Salamah, combined with the fact Oru struggled to cope with the noise, sound and smells of the big city, meant that after just under a year in Senghor, she decided to move on, catching a boat, first to Merab, in Thuvia, then a few weeks later, a trading ship, bound for the Isle of Kortos.

If the hustle and bustle of Senghor was a bit too much for Oru, then Absalom, the largest city in the Inner Sea region, was wholly overwhelming. Two days after her arrival, she joined an overland caravan as a guard and made her way west, following the coastline to Otari where she immediately found employ as a member of the newly formed Wheel Watch.
