Church of the Fire

The Church of the Fire is a name that has been used by a few different organizations and groups over the past millennia, but in some form or fashion are related to both The Mages and Merek Bas in one way or another
As an ancient organization, records seem to indicate that the Church of the Fire was one that documented the history of Merek Bas , and collected any known record of his life. From documents like Scrolls on the History of Merek Bas that have been found that were acredited to the Church, it seems they were more an organization of historians, rather than an actual religion. A large number of texts related to the life of Merek Bas were destroyed in the Great Purge after his death, so any writings had to be kept in secret. The Church acted to hide and preserve these writings, to better understand the greatest spellcaster whoever lived. It is unclear when/if the organization died out, but there has been no documented activity for several centuries.
In modern times, several small cult-like groups have taken on the name, using its title to perform heinous acts, like the Scorching Sadall and Tharivol Tanner's abominations. Oftentimes it seems that in one way or another, fanatic type people have latched on to the idea of trying to obtain power like Merek Bas, and believe by worshiping him, they will gain his power and influence. In the case of Brother Brinkin, the cult leader behind the Scorching Sadall attack in the city of Bas; he had discovered some Scrolls on the History of Merek Bas, and spent decades obsessing over them, finding what he called 'hidden messages' which he believed were directing him to perform horrible acts.
