Personal history
An orphan taken in by the local church Saewald’s early years were spent roaming the streets of Weltide and spending time at the docks watching boats come in and sail out. Though his appearance and affinity for the sea made it harder to make friends with the other children, he did have one friend in another orphan who lived in the town a young elven girl named Terresa. He would have lived a peaceful life in that small town if not for the events that would happen next. In the middle of the night the town would be assailed by the Black Thorns a pirate crew lead by their captain, a Tiefling by the name Alistair “Hellrose” Madrigold. The pirates invaded the town tearing through it looting any valuables that they came across and murdering any townsfolk who resisted or fought back. By the time the pirates had pillaged and destroyed the town Saewald was the only survivor. Hoping to escape Saewald tried to run from the pirates, but was unlucky enough to run straight into the hands of Captain Hellrose himself. Finding the look of defiance in Saewald’s eyes funny the captain decided to make Saewald a member of his crew hoping to break that defiance he had and make him a loyal member of the Black Thorns. That night as he was huddled in a corner of the ship’s cargo hold Saewald made a silent oath to the heavens and any deity who might listen that he wouldn't be broken by these pirates and that he would eventually crush the Captain and take the Black Thorns over for himself. He would spend the next twenty or so years like this never forgetting the oath he had made as a child to wipe out the Black Thorn pirates. He would learn how to wield a blade from the other crewmembers and learn how to fight and kill his opponents, how to use a navigators toolset to chart a course for the ship, and how to actually work and steer the ship as well. He would slowly rise through the ranks of the crew, participating in raids on other ships and villages, though he would always try to keep from any unnecessary killing if he could, he eventually found himself promoted to Captain Hellrose’s first mate. With his new position Saewald would slowly gather up other members of the Black Thorn’s who were dissatisfied with the way the captain ran the ship and plan a mutiny against the captain. On the day when the mutiny was supposed to happen Saewald called for a meeting of all the crew and lambasted the captain and calling for his downfall and how there were others who agreed with him. However none of the people he had recruited for this endeavor stepped forward and Captain Hellrose declared him a traitor. He was spared from being Keelhauled or hung from mast as a mercy for his years of service aboard the ship. Instead he was to be bound in chains, knocked unconscious and thrown overboard to be food for some sea creature or to die of starvation underwater. As he was knocked over the head and flung overboard, he thought of all the preparations and hope he had to just take out Captain Hellrose. He realized that the Black Thorn pirates were all cowards and that he should have been more willing to make sure that they were more fearful of him than anyone else. Then a second thought crossed his mind that even if he had been successful in taking out Captain Hellrose and taking the Black Thorns for himself there would always be more cowardly pirate crews out there who were just as bad if not worse than them. So as his consciousness faded and he hit the water and started to sink, he remade the oath from all those years ago, if he somehow was able to survive this and was able to continue to live he wouldn’t just take care of the Black Thorns but all cowardly pirate crews who roamed the seas and bring them onto a more lawful and good path. Those were his last thoughts and actions before he passed out. When he awoke he found himself miraculously alive and on a deserted beach. He wasn’t sure if this was just luck and some merfolk saved him by happenstance, or if this was divine providence and he had been saved to uphold his oath. Either way he wouldn’t waste this second opportunity, with that in mind he would eventually make his way to Floatsom to try and see if he could find people who could eventually help him meet his goals.
