Boggarts
Boggarts are common to folk tales originating in the Kingdom of Brisland and the Principality of Remaria. Accounts of the creatures vary by region, and even from village to village, although several common themes run across all versions of the legend. At its core, the story of the boggart is that of a malevolent creature that comes to steal naughty children in the night.
Summary
Boggarts are often described as large creatures standing erect like men, but twelve feet or more in height. They are described as ugly and hairy, with snarling maws full of fangs and dripping saliva in anticipation of their next meal. The tales say they feed on the flesh of human children, but prefer the sweet meat of naughty children most of all. Parents and village elders have spread the tales, exaggerating a little more every generation, in hopes that the fear of the boggarts will keep their children from misbehaving.
Historical Basis
Goblins by PJ Lynch
As horrifying as the legend of the boggart is, it has a basis in fact that is no less terrifying. The legend is based on one of the native creatures of the Faewylde called bugbears by the Eldaran. Bugbears are one of the few mortal species that inhabit the faewylde, but they are unable to procreate on their own. In fact, they are all the result of humans who have been twisted by the faewylde to reveal their inner self through their appearance. Only the most vile and hateful of humans can become a bugbear; a creature standing no taller
than four feet, covered in hair and wrinkles, and stooped over with twisted limbs and gnarled joints. They live a nomadic lifestyle within the faewylde, often crossing through weak points in the veil between worlds to abduct naughty children to join their ranks.
