The faintest trace of what can still remain of a person.
— Urthen, dwarven adventurer
Echoes are the blasted remnants of souls lost during the
End of All Things. If all had gone according to plan, there wasn't supposed to be anything after, and reality had no contingencies in place to handle these - as things tried to pull themselves together, Echoes were all that was left of them.
Description
Less than a fading breeze or a hushed whispers, Echoes are fragments of souls. They are glimpsed only in brief moments; as a physical shadow, or a shrouded figure in the fog, or a wordless voice lost on the wind. That is all that remain of them, no matter who they were in life. They come from every soul, from animals to elves, to bandits or kings.
As time passed, Echoes weaken and become more and more insubstantial. In time, they fade from the world entirely.
In the World
Echoes can be found across Ithekshem, often in vast numbers in places of impact or former population centers. In such places, the press of Echos become so thick to almost resemble a roiling fog, coming and going as if to the beat of a heart. Most Echos remain where they died, but some are nomadic, mimicking the moment of their death with less and less presence until only whispering winds remain.
Hm , now I'm curious...in a large enough city or settlement ... could a large enough group of Echos be considered a natural, reoccurring, 'weather event' ... like a regular bad tornado season?
Yes, absolutely - creepy, but harmless. Just the hint of a ghost, since they died so hard they didn't even leave ghost behinds. :D Good idea!!
