Career Progression

Typically, a cartographer would start in a shop by copying exisiting works to build up their skills, others may start by copying maps on their own as a child, or simply by starting out of passion. If they are talented enough in their ability to produce accurate maps, a new cartographer can eventually expand their work either by hiring others or traveling to far away places.

Payment & Reimbursement

Some cartographers are commissioned by individuals or organizations. Others explore new lands to create brand new maps, or revisit areas to update maps. They can either sell them to select buyers, or can run a business that copies maps to sell in larger quanities. Obviously, the pay can vary depending on the quality, rarity, and necessity of the map in question.

Other Benefits

The benefits of being a cartographer are not for all. There can be finanical compensation by selling maps or being hired by private buyers for various reasons. Depending on the quality of their work, a cartographer may gain recognition in the field or among those who will seek their services.

Perception

Purpose

To represent the terrain and attributs of the mapped area on paper. This includes being able to integrate reliefs and topography; as well as noting certain locations of importance, borders, and bodies of water.

Social Status

It is considered a rather prestigous trade once the cartographer has established themselves as a produces of quality maps.

History

The history of the profession first started with simple maps of territories carved into stone or clay tablets. Eventually it would move into further territories from the cartographer's home settlement. Over time, as cultures and nations would come together in peace and in war, maps would be shared amongst each other.

Operations

Materials

Paper, parchement, or any other form of taking down information of the area being mapped. Ink and a writing utensils. Some may have types of paints to illustrate or add details to their work.

Workplace

In the field or in a workshop owned by a professional cartographer.

Dangers & Hazards

There is a possibility of death or harm to oneself in the field due to the various hazards of wild terrain and creatures that live in the untamed lands of Ivryia.
