Pilote, il sert durant la première guerre mondiale. Il rencontre durant la guerre la femme qui devient son épouse, l'infimière Blanche-Olive Lavallée. Il contracte la grippe espagnole à la fin du conflit, tout comme sa femme; et ils sont tout deux rapatriés au Canada.
