Bates is a once fearful thief whose skill have risen, however he was prone to make mistakes. Timothy Smythe often had defend him from the other children that lived above Smythes Laundry particularly Berros . Who always chided him about his clumsy fingers. Bates was neither a good fleecer or teaser but he could run. He finally was caught by the town yellow jackets and taken in and was run into hellgate prison where he mysteriously contracted Lycanthropy. Bates' confidence has risen and Berros does not bully him anymore.
