The Maw
the Maw represent the Fisherman of Portsmouth. Most fisherman in Portsmouth belongs to this society because of the necessessity of banding to protect ones catch from the crab folk and assorted other surrounding dangers.
The fisherman of Portsmouth represent perhaps the the highest tithed industry. Paying tithes to the Shelleycoats, The temple of grasping waters, and the shorewolves in addition to regular Portsmouth taxes.
Structure
The captains are the senior members of the bassmen and pay an accordance of dues to Sorken for each aboard his or her ship or vessel.
Culture
The Bassmen provide the largest source of food in Portsmouth, fish. Fishermen in Portsmouth see the water as the source of all life. The guild is a necessity of safety. Tithes must be paid to the Temple of Grasping Waters as well as the Shelleycoats,reef sharks, and shore wolves. Practicing the most basic profession comes with high costs.
Those who operate outside of the guild are considered Flotsam. Of course an independent fisherman takes the greatest risks.
Public Agenda
The Maw protects and organizes the fisherman of Portsmouth. They protect them from the threats of the war and the water. They also make sure that prices of fish are standardized amongst those that fish the waters as a livelihood.
Fisherman who operate outside the Maw or scalescabbers represent a threat to unified fishermen by being able to undermine the market value. A scalescabber can shave costs on protection of his catch and therefore afford to charge less to Portsmouth restaraunts, markets, and costermongers.
History
Fishing used to be a dangerous business in Portsmouth till the Maw was organized by Thomas Clemens eighty years ago, the grandfather of Sorken Clemens. Thomas established ties with the Shelleycoats, The temple of Grasping waters and the Reef sharks thus making the job safer. The Shore wolves have become a more recent threat. As a result offshore distribution of fish sometimes happens.
