The Map of Wars
The Map of War was a large table map enchanted for a king of Crystland by a Hexer sometime in the 1400s. The map shows the entire country of Crystland as well as parts of neighboring countries. Most importantly, it shows the locations of armies and is enchanted so that pieces move on their own.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
The Hexer who created this map wanted their king to track the movement of his armies and those of neighboring countries. They enchanted the map and the pieces to move when the people they represented did. Although the pieces representing troops never change, anytime a monarch appears within the territory, a new piece is created. When that monarch dies, their piece is destroyed and a piece for the next one is created. When troops or people move off the map, their pieces vanish and reappear when they return.
History
The map was made and enchanted sometime in the 1400s for a king of Crystland. Historians believe the map was one of the last items ever enchanted by a Hexer, seeing as the power disappeared shortly after in the 1500s. The artifact was used by the king for tracking the movement and placement of his troops, as well as seeing if Whirlan, Tierhal, or Rifthaven were moving troops toward his borders.
The map was kept in a special room in the palace, one that only the rulers and select advisors were allowed in. It was used primarily in wartime, but during times of piece it provided a look at the usefulness of Gifted powers. It was lost in 2055 when the Dalirn took over the kingdom. Some believe it was destroyed and others think that one of the king’s trusted advisors hid it. Most, however, are glad that it is missing. If their princess and prince are still alive somewhere, the map would help the Dalirn to find them and kill them.
I looked across the table at my parents. Father leaned on the edge of the map, his eyes studying every inch of our country. Mother watched him, her gaze flicking every now and then to the figurines scattered along the top of Tierhal. She leaned in to point something out and I noticed how Lord Augustine sneered into his sleeve when she spoke. I'll show him, one day.
