Whirlan (WHUHR-lahn)
Currently controlled by Dalirn, Whirlan was the first country formed in Narthica. Historically, it has had a tense relationship with its neighbor Tierhal.
Perhaps we should work on our foreign relations. Shall we invite Crystland and Tierhal's royals to our daughter's birthday? Propose an alliance while they're here?
Structure
Whirlan, like most countries of Jerde, is ruled by an absolute monarchy. The king or queen from the ruling house is succeeded by their eldest child rather than the eldest son. This has been the law since 1005 when the only heirs were girls. Whirlan was originally ruled by House Nistern but after disease wiped out everyone in the main line, House Calleron took over.
History
Whirlan was the first country of Narthica and was founded around 890 to 900 AEA. It has been a monarchy the entire time, although it was originally led by House Nistern, which was a Dark Wielding house. House Nistern was replaced two hundred years later by House Calleron after a disease wiped out the ruling family, leaving only the youngest, Princess Amelia, who died when she was twenty-two. House Calleron has ruled the kingdom since then.
Eight years after King Rendorik was crowned, the country of Dalirn attacked the Whirlan Palace and killed nearly everyone, including the King and Queen. The attack was later known as the Assassination of Blood even though low-status innocents were killed as well as nobles and the rulers. Dalirn took over the country and has been ruling since, imposing a law against Gifteds. An organization known as the White Rebellion is currently attempting to retake Whirlan from the invaders.
Thanks to its strong economy, Whirlan has remained powerful despite the founding of Crystland and Tierhal. Foreign relations with those two countries were rarely civil, especially during the Six-Day War that involved all three major Narthican countries. Occasional disputes among the noble houses generally caused no issues, even when King Reuben and Queen Michela died under suspicious circumstances in 2046 Their son Rendorik became king and his wife soon gave birth to the next heir, Laharika. Although whispers claimed Rendorik and Lavinia had them killed, no proof could be found, even when a servant fled the palace.
Foreign Relations
Like many of Narthica's large countries, Whirlan does not have good relationships with its neighbors. This can be seen with its common skirmishes and brief wars with Tierhal and sometimes Crystland, such as in the famous Six-Day War. Relationships with Eterlanian countries are distant and impersonal, with some trade alliances. An alliance between Whirlan, Tierhal, and Crystland was proposed in 2054, but it fell through after an argument between King Mark of Crystland and King Carzonar of Tierhal. A few months after that, the Eterlanian country Dalirn invaded Whirlan with the help of dissatisfied nobles and took power after brutally killing the king and queen.

The next safehouse lasted longer, maybe almost a year. Lorenzo was good at hiding her, making sure she stayed out of sight whenever soldiers came through, and slipping her food regularly so she didn't get hungry.

Great article. I'm curious if the heir will be able to regain control of the country or if it is lost forever.
