Portals to Other Lands

A small number of people -- protagonists, usually -- find themselves walking from one place to another. It only takes one step to go through a portal. Because it's so rare and seemingly spontaneous, no one knows they have stepped through a portal until they take the next step into the new location. Therefore, there is no way to stop going through a portal.
The most commonly documented occurrence of portal walking is of the main characters of novels. In these cases, characters move between Jiren and Earth. There are some undocumented cases, however, of portals connecting two locations on Jiren. Eiro Ashen is known to have married a woman from Earth, Tessa Everest . She is one of the only people to have multiple trips through the portals.
It's possible that the portals are controlled by some sort of "higher power," though no one knows the truth of this. They are referred to as the Portal Masters. It's thought that Shadowland Dreams might be a Portal Master. Echo might also be a Portal Master, but there's no way to know for certain such a being exists.

Spread

Not many know about the portals. It's one of those things that everyone has heard of but doesn't believe. Very few actively seek the portals, because encountering a portal or portal traveler usually comes before belief.
