Fall of Leom

The Fall of Leom took place in 380 A.K. and signaled the end of an era in eastern Kolaskyva.   Following a Gerreggian Migration in 264 the balance of power within the Leomite empire was irrevocably changed. Large warbands first, then their families, moved into Amethia, pillaging and settling areas recently depleted of garrisons by civil wars. Unable to dislodge the tribes, the empire is forced to accept their presence in the region for the next century and employs them as allied armies.   The breakout of Civil War in 379 by a coup in the capital led to several pretenders rising up. However the several decades of civil war had left the empire weary and the soldiers tired. In 380, seizing upon built up discontent and spurred by the refusal to allow several clans to expand further, a multi-tribe revolt led by the charismatic Gradaggien seized the capital. Dethroning the recently declared Megnak. However, instead of installing a puppet on the throne like other Gerreggian chiefs had, Gradaggien declared himself to be the new legitimate Megnak, justified like his predecessors by force of arms.   Although earning the ire of the other pretenders on the peninsula Gradaggien had a clear advantage in arms. Promising more land for the tribes which had rallied to him, he secured their support in claiming for himself all of Amethia. Many local administrators throughout the empire willingly submitted to the conquerors, and would be incorporated into the following power structures.   Gradaggien would ultimately succeed in subduing most of the empire in Amethia, excluding the islands and of course the eastern half of the empire in what would become Destiny Island, accepting the nominal fealty of several southern regions. Both Galattia and Oriania remained outside of the control of the new emperor's control and both claimed to be the legitimate continuation of the empire.   Shortly after the death of Gradaggien in 397, however, the loose alliance holding together his empire, which was based on his charisma. began to fall apart. His "rule" over the other tribes had already been in name only, and by his successor's reign many of the other tribes saw little reason to continue cooperation. Thus, 380 is considered to be the fall of the empire, as a foreign chief claimed for himself the title of Megnak and, even though claimants still existed in the east they would never reclaim Amethia. However both of the successor empires would go on independently for some time afterwards.
