Metadimensions
Metadimensions (also known as metaplanes or Planes of Existence) are, in the simplest of terms, parallel worlds to our own.
A metadimension is a dimension that differs from our own based on its physical traits, such as gravity, chronology, states of matter, etc. and on more metaphysical traits, such as the passage of souls, prevalence and strength of psychic or arcane energies, and the concept of alignment. Each is an individual, concurrent, encapsulated dimension comparable or greater in scale to our universe, which we refer to as the Material Metadimension or Material Plane.
Most metadimensions connect to other metadimensions to greater or less extents.
Some metadimensions intersects others at specific points where the natural state of one metadimension is extremely similar to the natural state of another metadimensions (such as a particularly powerful volcano leading to a section of a metadimension of fire or earth). This intersection weakens the veil between metadimensions enough to allow seamless travel between the two metadimensions within the area of the intersection. Though such natural intersections often have volatile reactions or effects upon the surrounding area (see our example of the volcano).
Other metadimensions are almost exact mirrors of the Material Metadimension, with planetary alignment, locations of cities and other such landmarks being identical, so much so that it is believed that they are in fact overlapped completely. Even with this overlapping of the metadimensions seamless travel between such metadimensions still requires the use of specific psychic techniques, arcane spells or strong intersection points (which are noted to change location much similar to that of a tidal current), though these are much easier to both initiate or find due to the overlapping nature. Some have even accidently found themselves crossing through to another overlapping metadimension.
The most common form of connection between metadimensions is through the use of specially crafted portals and gateways that bridge the gaps between metadimensions in a safe and secure manner. Gateways are rare in the Material Metadimension, except for the site upon the world of "Y"Arkova which houses hundreds of gateways that could potentially lead to other metadimensions.
