Kadmos

Kadmos was the founder of the city of Rabdos, and its first king. Poets sing of his origins as an Ammayati prince, whose sister Europa was kidnapped by Zeus and taken across the sea, to the land that now bears Kadmos' name. Kadmos followed his sister in hopes of rescuing her, but after consulting an oracle, was told to found a new city and establish his dynasty instead. In the process of doing so, Kadmos slew a serpent, and on that spot, the city was built.   Kadmos ruled for several generations - some say 50 years, and gained fame throughout the land. He became first among equals of various new kings that arose in the Kadmean land. But after a long reign, it is said that the god Ares, for whom the slain serpent was sacred, demanded his due. To repay his debt, Kadmos submitted to the god's will, and along with his wife Harmonia, was transformed into a serpent, and left the city. His throne passed to his grandson, Pentheus, and Kadmos has not been seen since.   When he established his capital, he granted lands to his military companions, both those he brought with him from Ammayat, as well as local Kadmeans who had joined him. One of these was Spyridon, who was granted an estate about half a day's travel from the capital to the west.
