Maldyn

Daughter of Princess Everyn and Lord Vadryk of House Malmor, Maldyn was the total opposite of her warlike and forthright mother and of her unpredictable and adventurous older brother Parnan. She was accounted a gentle child and young-woman, patient in her lessons, even in her manners, and presenting an aspect of humble nobility. In response to words of praise such as these in relation to her daughter, Everyn reportedly said with a laugh "I must have dozed off when she was conceived, for if I had worked my will she would have been a spark from my own fire." But she was proud of her daughter and the two loved each other dearly.
She was prouder still when, after the departure of Parnan to establish new lands of his own in The Spice Lands, and his declaration of disinterest in inheriting his father's lands, Maldyn petitioned for, made a case for, and won her father's approval to become his heir. This was without precedent in Malmor at the time, and was not without its opposition, but Vadryk became convinced by his daughter's arguments and worked to legitimise this unusual claim in the years before his death.

Upon Vadryk's death there were many who assumed that Maldyn would become merely a prize to be won by an ambitious man, but it proved otherwise and she chose her own path at every stage of her rulership. The couplet famously attributed to her read: If victory alone can sate a noble heart/Words serve as well as steel, fly swift as any dart.
