Janakal
Janakal is the ruler of the Mayronin polity.
Personality and Behaviour
Janakal is primarily focused on improving her people’s lives through scientific advancements, but will occasionally divert her attention to cultural development.
She places a high emphasis on founding and spreading a religion, as well as building world wonders. She is neither bold nor aggressive, and is one of the leaders more likely to be fearful of other nations.
Janakal is interested in claiming a small territory and protecting it with a large defensive army that primarily consists of infantry and ranged units. However, she does not denounce or go to war with other civilizations very often.
In spite of her passivity, Janakal is quite loyal to her allies. Her tendency to become guarded, however, can make it difficult for warmongers or leaders who have built several world wonders to befriend her.
She typically ignores city-states, but will sometimes bully them.
History
Commonly known as "Janakal the Great," the Mayronin queen is perhaps the most renowned of all Mayronin rulers. Ascending to the throne at the tender age of 59, Janakal inherited the capital city of Pallen during a time of great turmoil. Janakal is best known for reinvigorating the ravaged city, which had been sacked repeatedly during the rule of his predecessors. Leading a vast construction effort, Janakal oversaw the creation of immense and remarkably detailed structures throughout her domain.
EarlyLife
Janakal's mother, Lady Kukzac, was one of few women to ever rule independently over the Mayronin. Typically the crown was only passed on to the son of a king, but in the absence of a suitable male heir, leadership was bestowed upon Lady Kukzac, who asserted her right to the throne as the granddaughter of a past queen. Ruling for 15 years until Janakal came of age, this unusual deviation in the traditionally patriarchal society led directly to the later efforts of Janakal to legitimise her reign and the rule of her family line.
When Janakal did take the throne, the city of Pallen was in a tumultuous position, having been the target of frequent incursions from the neighbouring Human kingdom of Delphia in the preceding years. Attempting to make a clear statement to Pallen's rivals early in her reign, Janakal sent her own raiding parties against the Delphia, attempting to capture several of their leaders and sacrificing them in retribution for the attacks. Unfortunately, the Moricanna Empire restructured it’s forces and attacked Pallen, eventually capturing and making it a puppet city. Today The Mayronin populace is still actively resisting the Moricanna occupation.
The Loss of Pallen
With the intention of reclaiming and returning Pallen to its former glory, as well as also establishing the legitimacy of her rule, Janakal initiated the construction of grand monuments throughout the new capital city of Kaliti, with reliefs extolling the virtues of her family line. A number of impressive structures were built, including the Temple of the [TBD] and a large central complex known simply as "The Palace," featuring a peculiar four-story tower unlike any seen throughout the Mayronin realm. Yet, of the many edifices assembled during her reign, none surpass the Temple of Inscriptions. Built to serve as Janakal's eventual burial tomb, construction has already begun on the stepped pyramid.
Early reports of the construction suggest plans to feature intricate carvings and hieroglyphic text, as housing for an ornate sarcophagus. The walls of Janakal's tomb in the lower level of the temple contain the longest set of Mayronin glyphs known in Dwarven cultre. Although still the subject of interpretation, the proposed glyphs appear to chronicle the events of Janakal's life thus far.
Plans for her sarcophagus feature an elaborately detailed stone lid with glyphs representing [TBD - the planets and several constellations]. These [TBD celestial] elements in particular have contributed to controversial theories regarding the direct involvement of deities in the Mayronin culture.
Popular Opinion & Legacy
Janakal the Great has the potential to be considered to be one of the most revered leaders in Mayronin history. While the remarkable monuments and sculptural creations found throughout Kaliti serve as a kind of public relations campaign, she has a lot riding on successfully reclaiming Pallen from the Moricanna. So far in her time as queen, nearly 1000 structures have been assembled in Kaliti, requiring stones that weigh up to 15 tons. Although her future is still being written today, we can say with certainty that her efforts to restore the kingdom of Pallen has led to the assembly of some of the greatest monuments and art ever created by the Mayronin.
