History
As one of the most influential leaders in the history of central Kai, Surlamin is in the process of making a pivotal impact on the future of the Malgian empire. Serving as the Sultanah she is known as a cunning diplomat who leverages her territory's strategic location to position her kingdom as a major player on the world's stage.
Early Life
As the fifth and youngest child of Sultan Ashmorrah, Surlamin's path to the throne of Malgia was not assured. Her oldest brother, Bilgha was the designated heir, and he ascended the throne following their father's murder. Unfortunately for Surlamin, her older brother believed eliminating his siblings was the simplest means of securing his throne, and so Surlamin and her brother Malik fled the country, living within the edges of the Undersun Empire for nearly two decades.
Rise to Power
Following the death of Sultan Bilgha, his son Abumorrah ascended the throne despite the rightful heir being Malik. Raising an army with the assistance of the Undersun (where Surlamin and her brother had remained in exile), Malik invaded the Malgian empire and successfully deposed the usurper Abumorrah. Unfortunately for the two warring claimants to the Malgian throne, they both died in battle, leaving Surlamin to ascend as Sultanah.
The Mayronin Empire had sent armies to support Abumorrah, thousands of whom were captured with the usurper's defeat. Surlamin demonstrated her superb diplomacy skills when she negotiated a steep ransom for returning the prisoners to Mayronin.
Reign
Once firmly established on the throne, Surlamin enjoyed newfound prestige as the leader of an emboldened Malgian empire flush with wealth. She immediately began efforts to reform the administrative system of her nation, implementing new forms of taxation. She also looked to expand the reach of her empire through trade and further resource development.
Surlamin has various projects including military and territorial expansion, outlays for new construction, and grand displays of cultural and artistic expression. Some question whether all the expenses involved could lead to the eventual depletion of Malgia's vast treasury. Some advisors are already suggesting she tighten the purse strings, and restrict her great ambitions for the kingdom. Surlamin is also faced with a difficult task in maintaining control over the distant territories it manages (namely Fessime), as well as many of the wild-land areas in between that are technically out of Malgian control.
Surlamin worries that if something should happen to her, Malgian's power and influence could began to wane. The Undersun empire has been getting bolder and more aggressive under the leadership of Tiltania. Malgian trade routes could be usurped by others, and fiscal troubles could have a domino effect on everything she has fought to build. With all the advances garnered by Surlamin's exceptional administrative and diplomatic skills, what could end up becoming lost by her successors?
Popular Opinion & Legacy
Surlamin is widely viewed today as one of history's greatest diplomats, excelling in the art of balancing friend and foe, Celestial and Infernal. Her carefully crafted diplomatic schemes are credited with allowing Malgia's continued independence despite the scheming of many neighboring kingdoms as well as the powerful Undersun Empire. So far, her reign is marked by religious tolerance, scientific learning, and an artistic flowering in central Kai that has not been known for many decades.
