Battle of Arkanshan ford.
The Conflict
Prelude
There was a great draught in the summer that lead to the river Arkanshan drying up to only a few feet in late summer. This allowed for the walkers of the Blight to stumble across in hordes.
Deployment
many settlements were taken unaware as they made ready for night. The walkers began to move inland while alarm fire pyres were lit, warning the River watch.
Battlefield
the main area that the walkers were able to traverse was the Ford. This ford is the highest point and never before seen until the water was this record low.
Conditions
The fields around the ford was mud filled in the early hours of the morning when the watch arrived. When the sun rose the ground dried becoming hard but in many places it was slippery and as many soldiers died due to bad footing as to tooth and claw.
The Engagement
the alarm fires were lit around 2-3 in the morning, fortunately the Codrington River watch were veterans and were able to get to the hot-spots by daybreak preventing many more deaths. The initial engagement was with arrows and all looked good until the sun rose and the light showed the true size of the terror. thousands of the dead were coming across and the arrows were pitifully few.
The bodies of the dead piled up allowing more to cross as they scratched and clawed their way across making the ford three times as wide. At that time Lord Trell arrived with his host to give much needed aid. Duke Codrington ordered a charge while Lord Trell advised a pullback order to the ridge line to allow the walkers to funnel into a kill-zone. Trell was ordered to join the charge and Lord Codrington lead the host into the waiting horde of walkers.Duke Trell as a good soldier orderd his men to follow. This action by the commander is known as the folly of Arkanshan Ford. Many good knights were killed that afternoon.the river ran blood for many weeks after this battle.
At one point when all looked lost and the knights momentum lost , Lord Trell ordered a pull back to the ridge line over looking the ford. Duke Codrington was so far into the battle Trell knew he was lost and pulled back. Some say the Codringtons were dead by this time others claim Trell was a coward for leaving the battle. What is known forsure is that Trell was able to withdraw to the ridge and enable a defensive line that indeed funnel the horde into a kill-zone.The whole day was one of slaughter. It is said that lord Trell fought the dead lord Codrington at the end of the battle. The Duke has never confirmed this but since that day the two houses have had a hatred for one another.
