Structure
The high protector is elected by the Border council in Helkirk.
Next in order is the two Lord Protectors, Protector of the south shore and protector of the north shore.
The Protector of the North shore is in charge of offensives vs the dead while the South shore protector is in charge of Defensives along its length.
The two have always been chosen from the ranks of Protectors of Terak.
Culture
A military organization, mainly consisting of mercenaries hired by the crown but also professional soldiers.Local lords send their knights to the Wardens, as it is a badge of honor to have knights that have served in the watch in their employ. It is also used as a way to punish some, as it is a dangerous position.
The wardens along the Borderland settlements are received well in taverns and some have even become local heros from the daring exploits told by Bards and story tellers around hearths of great battles vs the walking dead.

Many forts and defenses along the shore line. It is becoming the longest defensive line in the empire.
History
After the second crusade and failed attempt at the crossing, the line was drawn here at the rivers edge. the south side provides natural defenses and higher ground along its length so was the obvious choice to make.
Over the years , many forts and castles have been built along its shores, also a well made highway runs the length with various degrees of condition. From wide boulevards for multiple ranks of troops to march all the way to single cart dirt roads.
Over the years during the shallow seasons ( end of summer to winter ) the dead stumble across and during these times the River watch is in full motion. Constant patrols make for a relatively safe season. But a year doesn't go by that a few drag down one or two Wardens to their ranks.
The river is our wall, the wall is the line, we are part of the wall.
The symbol of the order is used by all of the River watch. From the Shore Protectors all the way to the hired swordsman. It is believed that angels watch over the battles and will protect those that defend the shore agasint the dead when wearing this symbol.The more superstitious the soldier is the more wings will be found on his armor and weapons. The commanders wear great gold or bronze wings attached to their backs like banners to garner the most good luck as possible. The Blue symbolizes the rivers water while the Red blade has been added to represent the fallen.
