Creation Myth - Guardians
The story of the Amagus and Amatra, and how their blood became the crystal Vollonite. It also explains why some people are Inborn ("Changed" in local custom) and how certain species were created, including humans.
Summary
“Long ago, before your steam engines were designs. Before your people built the great ships that brought them here. Before any peoples were born. There was the Anima.
The Anima was the guardian of our world, the life giving spirit of it without a body of it’s own. It was its duty to ensure the balance of nature, the cycle of life and death. Through the centuries it kept the balance but it did not feel fulfilled. It felt distanced from the world since it had no body to experience it with. So, after observing how all the animals came in pairs, it decided to split itself in two. Two halves of the same whole into two bodies to maintain the balance. The Anima became Amagus and Amatra, massive beasts the size of a mountain.
Amagus was the guardian of Sky and Sea. He had wings to fly through the clouds and fins to swim the oceans. Amatra was the guardian of the Earth and all that happened upon it or within it. She was made of wood, scale, and skin with eyes of fire. Together they maintained our world. Changing the mountains and deep ocean currents, moving the land for the benefit of all who lived in the world. After a time they wanted children of their own, as all creatures do. Not just the animals they watched over but true children of their image. Children that would need a bit of each to come to life. Amatra's breath would give them the earth and fire she controlled. Amagus's breath would give them the Air and Water in his command.
And this was how they breathed life into the Dragons from bits of fur from Amagus. From Amatra’s scales they created the Harpies. The sea serpents were made from Amagus’s gills and the golems they made from Amatra’s eyes. And they were happy for a time. Each child holding equal parts of their parents. They changed the world again to make perfect homes for their new children. Mountain homes for the dragons and harpies so they could fly with Amagus. Deep ocean caves for the sea serpents so they could swim with Amagus, and volcanoes for the golems to play with Amatra.
But Amatra became lonely again. Amagus had more children in his realms then she did in hers. She longed for another child but Amagus was full and did not see her need. So in secret she created one more.
From her skin, and the dirt and her fire. But she did not have Amagus’ breath to give life. So she used some river water and her sole breath instead, hoping to cover the four elements. And it worked. Humans were born. She kept them hidden in the deep forests away from the eyes of Amagus, least he be angry the she made a child without him.
But Humans were not content to stay in one place. Her fire had given them intelligence that none of her other children had. And the river water gave them wander lust, always moving. They wanted to explore and roam. They wanted to play with the Golem’s even when they got burnt. They wanted to sing with the Harpy’s and dance with the dragons. It wasn’t long before Amagus learned the truth. He was angry but he tried to accept these new children even though they were not like the others.
They had been made from the spirit of only one guardian and they continued to throw off the balance of the world whereever they went. Amatra and Amagus had to fix everything they broke, and spent more time watching over the humans then they did the rest of the world. And the world started to suffer because of it. Amagus finally had enough and told Amatra that they needed to destroy the humans least they destroy the world. But Amatra saw something in them that Amagus did not, the capacity to become guardians themselves. They just lacked a piece of Amagus to make them whole. So as Amagus prepared to destroy the humans, Amatra went into his realm. She took water from the deepest ocean, and air from the top of the highest mountain. She gathered up a small group of humans and gave them these gifts and they were changed. They could now create and destroy like the Guardians. They had the very soul of the world inside of them now, and could bend the world to their will. She showed them to Amagus, surely he couldn’t destroy them now. They could instead teach them to use these new gifts to protect the world.
But Amagus was furious. She had stolen from him, and acted alone when their were two guardians for a reason. He lashed out and killed many humans, changed and unchanged alike. Amatra hid as many as she could in deep caves around the world then stood and fought Amagus. The battled ranged for time untold. The ground shook and cracked, their spilled blood hardening into crystals where it fell. Until finally, they delivered the killing blow to each other. As they fell, the spirits inside them spilled out become Anima once more. It turned their broken bodies into dust and spread it around the world they had maintained so that their blood and bone could continue to affect it. Then the Anima retreated in despair into the underbelly of the world never to be seen again.
Without a guardian to watch over the world, the world became as it is. Some humans are changed, others are not. Some with the potential to become guardians. Others who destroy the balance of the world wherever they go.
You come seeking the crystals of these mountains, as many before you have done. Just remember that they are not magic as your people have called it, but the blood of the guardians. And that blood runs in my veins as much as it does in every changed child of this world.”

Spread
This is an Oral story of the creation of the world, as told by followers of the local religion of the Morendra Mountain residents.
Variations & Mutation
This is a variation on the more commonly believed creation myth followed by believers in the Oracles of Aacahin. In that belief, there was no Anima. Only the two Guardians, two male brothers, commonly referred to as the Oracles, and their 12 angels. They all left the mortal world after their great battle to return one day when humanity proved to be more their equals.
