Traditional Garyan House
Purpose / Function
The traditional function of a Tauscher style house is to serve as a place of residence and of business. The upper floor serves as a home with bedrooms and a kitchen. The bottom floor has a storage space and a large room that is usually used as a store.
Design
The entrance room is usually a large, rectangular room with a staircase along one of the side walls. Underneath the stairs is a small storage closet. The floor is traditionally made of wooden planks, but some higher-end homes have stone floors.
Entries
There is usually one door between the entrance room and the outdoors. There are also anywhere from 2-8 windows spread along the walls.
Sensory & Appearance
Most entrance rooms are lighted by simple chandeliers or torch sconces along the wall. During the day, entrance rooms with many windows are usually lit primarily with natural daylight.
Contents & Furnishings
Most entrance rooms have a counter along the back wall and multiple shelves spread throughout the room. This is because many entrance rooms are used as a store where the inhabitant of the house can sell whatever they wish.
Alterations
Some Tauscher houses have a third story that has additional bedrooms, but these are rare. A more common modification is to have a balcony on the second floor that extends over the front entrance.
Architecture
Tauscher houses are narrow two-story buildings, traditionally built with wooden supports and either clay or brick walls. The second floor overhangs the first floor slightly to provide more room on the second floor without taking away road space. There is usually one door on the first floor and numerous windows scattered across the walls. The roof is usually an a-frame that comes to a steep point.
History
The original Tauscher house was created by Sigmund Tauscher who wanted to live in his store. His customers loved the ingenuity of his design and begin to replicate it across their town and, eventually, across the entire empire.
