The setting of the Riddles of the Crown campaign.
In the beginning, there was an egg. This egg sat in a nest of space and time, drifting through the nothing surrounding it. After a brief eternity, a crack began to form on the top of the egg, crawling down the sides until the shell finally fell apart. In the remnants of the egg sat three small beings decorated with scales, wings, claws, and teeth. The first and largest was a brilliant golden color, its wings seemed to shed light on its siblings, and its eyes glowed with a fiery passion. The second was smaller and matched the void around it with deep purple scales, pale eyes, and smatterings of sparkling scales on the undersides of its wings. The first two dragons leapt out of their nest and began to frolick throughout the void of time and space. The third was left behind and sat in the nest, surrounded by the eggshell and the infinite nothing. The third was the smallest and weakest of the three, its skin decorated with black scales and its eyes filled with an inky black similar to the surrounding void. While its siblings played, the third sat in their nest and contemplated many things.
It thought about how it and its siblings had come into existence, how big and strong his brother was, how colorful and beautiful his sister was, and how much fun they were having together. After some time contemplating these things, the meek dragon became bored and wanted someone to play with. It peered into the void and saw its siblings in the distance, flying around just like their first moments out of the egg. The egg. The small dragon crawled through its nest, gathering every fragment of the egg that it could find. After piling the fragments in the center of the nest, the dragon sat and thought for some time. While he thought, his siblings grew and began to learn of some of the things they could do. At some point, the glowing dragon learned how to use its own dazzling shine to exhale a spout of brilliant light and warmth through the void, illuminating everything within sight. Shortly after, the purple dragon discovered a way to channel the cold of the infinite dark surrounding her to create a font of cold, pale light from its maw. The two siblings were excited by their new abilities and returned to their nest to test them. When they arrived, they saw the small, black dragon sitting around the fractured parts of their egg.
The smallest dragon was aware of the approach of his siblings, but he ignored them, confident that he had discovered a way to use the egg. He began to slowly put the egg back together, one piece at a time, until he had formed a rough sphere. Then the small dragon sat back and considered what to do next. As he thought, his siblings became curious and began to cautiously prod the small dragon. It ignored them, so they began to inspect the egg. As they inspected it, the small dragon watched them with its empty eyes, tracking their every move. The small dragon continued to think and began to lose focus on its siblings. After thoroughly inspecting the egg, the two siblings sat for a brief moment considering what to do next. Neither of them, however, could remain focused for long and soon leapt out of the nest to continue playing with each other. While they played, they continued to practice using the new abilities they had discovered. One of the golden dragons blasts grazed the small dragon’s tail, burning it and coating part of the nest in bright light. In a fit of pain and fury, the small dragon took flight for the first time, charging towards the golden dragon.
The small dragon took both siblings by surprise and slammed into the golden dragon’s chest. It’s claws slid between the golden dragon’s scales and it scrambled towards its head. As it scurried up the much larger golden dragon, the small dragon started to formulate a plan of attack. As it neared the base of the neck, the small dragon leapt, once again, into the air and lashed at the right eye of the golden dragon. Its claws tore through the flesh, ripping the eye from its socket and sending it spiralling into the void. After landing its blow, the small dragon began to retreat to the nest. As it flew back, the purple dragon unleashed a powerful torrent of pale light from its jaws in the direction of the small dragon. It’s blast glanced off the back of the dragon and coated the egg and one side of the nest in a pale frost. The small dragon collapsed into the nest and hid within the strands of space and time. After recovering from the small dragon’s outburst, the two siblings began to inspect the frozen egg. After another brief eternity of waiting, recovering, and observing, the siblings deemed it safe to play with the egg. They began to fly in circles around it, chasing after each other and forming the sky of the material plane. After they began to play with the egg, the siblings came to a realization, they would need a way to refer to each other and the small dragon. The golden dragon took the name of Sul, the purple dragon took the name of Vulon, and they deemed the small, black dragon Naak.
