Light Freighter

The majority of goods and passengers in Kantostara are transported by the heavy freighters belonging to the United Association of Guilds from Taanruk who controls the interstellar trade routes, but the light freighters take care of all the jobs considered too small to be profitable for the UAG freighters.   Light freighters come in as many different sizes and configurations as there are worlds in Kantostara since the term light freighter is actually a catch-all designation for any of the smaller space craft that regularly transports cargo loads of no more than twenty six tons and/or passenger loads of no more than 23. They serve the worlds located farther away from the main trade routes as well as carrying special goods or passengers. For some of the most distant worlds, the light freighters are the only means of passenger travel and exchange of goods with their local neighbors.   Most light freighters are owned and operated by their pilots who, along with any crew members, usually live on board. While life on board these ships is often romanticized in adventure stories, the reality of it is actually a lot of hard work for not a great deal of profit. There have been times when groups of light freighter pilots have tried to band together to take on bigger and more profitable jobs, but the UAG has always been quick to crack down on that sort of thing. They will not tolerate any competition for their heavy freighters, even in the most distant of sectors.   Of course, light freighters are also the preferred vehicles for smugglers. These smaller ships tend to be quite fast and agile and often contain hidden compartments, making them perfect for clandestine activities. Even the most reputable of pilots have been known to engage in a little smuggling from time to time to help make ends meet. Needless to say, the UAG frowns on this practice. Any pilot caught engaging in any kind of illicit activity will face heavy fines and be banned from all the interstellar trade routes.
