The Smouldering Mount

The Black Ash Islands

Far to the north of Etude, along the eastern coast of Allegri lies a chain of volcanic islands, the largest of which is called the Smouldering Mount. The main island is over 100 miles across and the beaches are an equal mix of coarse sand and ash, making the appearance of the islands extremely unique in coloration; they're completely black and as the tides move around the islands the currents create patterns of swirling black water that can help knowledgable sailors (of which there are incredibly few) keep track of the time, weather conditions, and even tell recent geological activity relating to the volcanoes in the area.

The islands themselves boast a wide variety of plant and animal life despite the harsh conditions. Seeds dropped by flying beasts led to small plants and brush growing low over the surfaces near the water, which in turn provided enough nuturients to the soil for larger life, like trees and small animals, to thrive and grow into a self-containted ecosystem. Now, nearly the entire island is covered in lush, darkly-hued vegetation and even the common types of insects and animals have adapted their coloration to blend with the shadowy colors around them.

Geography

The Smouldering Mount is soaring peak that is in a continual state of erruption. Smoke, ash, and extreme heat all flow consistently from the center of the island and ocean winds carry it all across the surrounding hills and valleys. There are several small lakes and rivers that are fed from the regular rain, however the water is mildly toxic due to the sheer amount of ash in the air and soil of the island.

Fauna & Flora

Many types of plant and animal live on the islands and have adapted unique coloration and habits to survie. Most mammals and non-migratory birds have evolved with much darker colors than usual. Black and near-black are the norm and the heat that emanates from the mountain has created a sub-tropical environment further north than usually possible.
