grekk (grECK)

The enormous, territorial grekk is the most feared creature on Kavrillia, and with good reason. They are fierce predators responsible for the destruction of countless ships throughout history, and are the main reason the northern and southern hemispheres remained isolated from each other until relatively late in history.

There is no way to win a fight against a grekk, so avoiding them is paramount. All Kavrillian ships are equipped with sonar and an alarm system so the vessel can turn around at the first sign of one of these mighty beasts. Before this technology was invented, sea travel was confined to the shallower waters near the coasts, or the colder waters in high latitudes where grekks never venture. Even then, large numbers of vessels disappeared without a trace in ancient times.   Most Kavrillian children go through a phase where they are obsessed with and/or terrified by grekks. Those who never outgrow this fascination are among the handful of thrill seekers every year who get too close to a grekk and pay with their life.   A dead grekk washing up on shore is considered a very good omen among the Lanarians. Their meat is inedible, but their fat, oils, bones, and teeth are all useful and, due to their extreme rarity, extremely expensive status symbols.   A distinctive and ancient constellation in the northern hemisphere of Kavrillia is known as the Great Grekk.
