Elk
The Elk
The Elk is a large animal of the ungulate order, possessing an even number of toes on each foot, similar to those of camels, goats and cattle. It is a ruminant species, with a four-chambered stomach, and feeds on grasses, plants, leaves and bark. During the summer, elk eat almost constantly, consuming between 4 and 7 kilograms (8.8 and 15.4lbs) of vegetation daily. Males are called bulls, and females are called cows. Elk are more than twice as heavy as mule deer and have a more reddish hue to their hair colouring, as well as large, buff-coloured rump patches and smaller tails. Moose are larger and darker than elk; bulls have distinctively different antlers. Elk cows average 225 to 241kg (496 to 531lbs), stand 1.3m (4.3ft) at the wither, and are 2.1m (6.9ft) from nose to tail. Bulls are some 40% larger than cows at maturity, weighing an average of 320 to 331kg (705 to 730lbs), standing 1.5m (4.9ft) at the wither and averaging 2.45m (8.0 ft) in length, while large males reach 1.7m (5.6ft) tall at wither and 3m (9.8ft) in length. The Giant Elk are the largest males and are estimated to weigh up to 600kg (1,300lbs), while females weigh 260 to 285kg (573 to 628lbs). Elk are large herbivores and herd animals similar to Deer, Elk gather in herds, while most moose are solitary beasts. They are common in cold and temperate plains. Elk, Stag's, and Deer are sometimes the animal companions of Druid's or Ranger's. River Elk are larger and more powerful specimens of elk, generally found in The Northern Wastes (most regions), secluded areas of Elosia, Gondonia, Thracia, and Thentia and throughout Northern Zamoria.Basic Information
