Magitech FTL spaceship
An incredibly broad classification of spaceships, Magitech FTL spaceships were first invented early in the Second Age, and have existed ever since. Specifically, the term encompasses all FTL spaceships that rely on Vita-powered magic to exceed lightspeed.
Magitech ships were intentionally designed for accessibility. During the First Age, and thus the start of the Second Age, FTL tech was invented and owned by only a rare few species, who tended to guard the technology dearly. In response, other species attempted to replicate the technology, or find their own methods of FTL travel, but it was no easy task.
Some of the early Vita-Touched, slowly gaining the ability to use magic, saw an opportunity here. They banded together, magic-wielding members of several species, and reached out to inventors and mechanics. Together, this mixed team invented a brand new method of FTL travel, and ships capable of using it. And then they opened it up to everyone.
Accessibility
Though they were designed to be more accessible than non-magitech ships, the reliance on magical components brought its own challenges to magitech ships. The earliest models required Vita-Touched mechanics, who could work with a ship so embued with magic. In the earliest commercial models this was fixed, and the magic was limited only to the Magitech FTL drive itself. Still, Vita-Touched mechanics were regularly required, either to repair the drive itself, or to re-enchant (or 'refill') the drive with new Vita. As technology improved throughout the Second Age, so did the accessibility of magitech. In later models, the FTL drives could take in Vita themselves, passively, provided the ship spent some amount of time in atmosphere (or landed on the surface) of life-bearing planets. The Magai, the primary organization of Vita-Touched and who had thus become owners of the technology, also sought out ways to sell replacement drives with magic already in place, letting non-magical mechanics (or those simply not trained to use their magic in such a way) replace the drives if problems arose. Even with the shifting views of Vita-Touched, magitech ships continue to be a common sight throughout the galaxy, even if numbers decreased during the Third Age. No pilot would willingly replace their ship, after all, for a more expensive model that doesn't fly nearly as well, and which breaks more often. And if their mechanic can replace parts only Vita-Touched can work with, well... No one has to know, right?
