Breath Potion Masters

From now forward, the possession of or creation of breath potions, as well as the possession or cultivation of ingredients for breath potions is strictly prohibited. Any siren found guilty of possession of a breath potion will be sentenced up to ten years in prison, and any siren found guilty of breath potion creation or the cultivation of frogspawn will be sentenced to up to thirty years in prison."
-Tudine Decree, year 1228

Breath Potion Masters

Several years before the Srileniare Massacre a few curious skee siren began experimenting on a plant that they noticed grew both underwater and above water that locals called frogspawn. Over time, the skee sirens crafted a medicine that caused a siren to be able to breathe out of water if they did not already possess that ability. The reverse was also a true. An animal that drank the frogspawn potion could also breathe underwater for a limited amount of time. The creators named this concoction "breath potion."   These sirens began trading breath potions at a very high value, especially targeting transformed siren that missed certain friends or family above the water, or were homesick. These siren began to visit old friends and places mostly without notable incident. Eventually, the secret of frogspawn got out. A group of skee who believed that the sirens had stolen four of their children saw their opportunity and took it, launching an attack against Srileniare.   Following this attack, The Tudines banned the creation and possession of breath potions, and began working to eradicate frogspawn completely. These actions were taken in the hope that no outsiders could possible get their hands on breath potions again, and to prevent siren from traveling into dangerous places.   The original creators of the breath potion still live, and have passed on their secret to a few. This trade is, of course, illegal now. However, if one were to travel to a distant lake or pond in Kelunbar, one might find a discreet patch of frogspawn and a careful potion master willing to trade. The masters, in true skee spirit, believe that the potion is one of the greatest achievements and discoveries ever made, so they work hard to make sure it is not forgotten.

The Creation of Breath Potions

The creation of breath potions seems to be simple, and frogspawn grows rapidly and readily, but it takes time, and the longer the potion sits, the longer its effects on the consumer.   Other ingredients include water, salt, and watermint.

Effects

Besides being able to breath both in water and out of water, extended use of breath potions appears to cause users to have difficulty breathing without it.

The Srileniare Massacre

On a fateful day, the sirens of Srileniare were attacked by raiding skee. With the power of unprecedented surprise, the band of skee managed to fell seventy-three siren before being captured and detained by the Tudine Guard. A mere hour after the skee were captured and questioning began, all of the skee suddenly drowned.   Confusion around how the skee managed such a deep underwater barrage ran rampant throughout the city and soon the rest of Kelunbar's lakes and rivers. Rumors leaked far and wide. Some believed that the skee were skee siren turning against the tudine. Others said it was an army of undead. With heavy investigation, the Tudines eventually managed to discover exactly what had caused this terrible encounter, and dispelled many rumors with a new decree.

Rik Leles Rillesa

At first glance, you cannot tell that Rillesa is a siren at all. This skee siren poses as a Roamer near Tubi Lake where she grows a large patch of frogspawn and lives above the water as a normal skee by consuming breath potions regularly. Rillesa and her sister Rik Leulas Livenet are two of the original potion masters.

I love this! The detail that prolonged use makes it difficult to breathe without the potion is a particularly nice touch.
