Drake Pebbles

Protective Stones

Territorial and protective, Wyverns have come up with a clever way to guard their nests. While tree etchings mark the boundaries of their territory and warn other wyverns they've travelled too far, enchanted pebbles alert their creator if their nest and horde is being approached by other creatures. Most creatures don't notice or even know about these rocks at all. Wyverns, however, do have a sense about these stones, and know that if they've come across a drake pebble they may be in for an unpleasant entanglement with another of their kind. To wyverns, drake pebbles symbolize a deep trespassing of boundaries, and the wyvern you've infringed upon is entitled to a lifelong war and grudge.

Creation

Only wyverns have the mysterious power to create these stones and it is assumed by most to be something that Druko, Being of Protection gifted the wyverns with.   First a wyvern decides where to create their nest. Usually this an area that is dark and hidden by rocks and greenery and often the wyvern in question will move rocks and branches around to hide the space more thoroughly. After their space has been designated, the wyvern collects three to seven normal looking rocks to enchant.   Enchanting must be done under the full light of Druko's moon, and is simply performed by the wyvern urinating on all of the stones. This creates a connection between the wyvern and those stones. In fact, on other nights where Druko's moon is full, wyverns avoid eliminating at all, so as not to accidentally create a connection with other rocks on accident.   After this, the wyvern strategically places each stone within varying locations of their nest.

Connection

While the wyvern is away from their nest, possibly scavenging food or looking to add to their horde, the rocks provide a sense of what is moving in the surroundings. Older wyverns are skilled at identifying exactly what is moving, and can identify whether it may be another wyvern, a nosy skee, or simply just a chipmunk. In contrast, younger wyverns often don't stray far from their nest as they rush back and forth to investigate every ping they receive from their stones.

Magical

Appearance

The stones have a completely average appearance, and if there was no psychic connection, even a wyvern could forget which stones they chose to turn into drake pebbles.

Nests

Wyvern nests are two things: comfortable places to sleep, and safe places to store treasure. What the wyvern is interested in collecting depends on the species. For example, Agams are known for their obsession with mica, whereas lindins spend their days collecting salt.

I love the image of younger wyverns hurrying back to their nest every time something triggers their pebbles. It's such a wonderful idea - and beautifully written too!

'In fact, on other nights where Druko's moon is full, wyverns avoid eliminating at all, so as not to accidentally create a connection with other rocks on accident.' This is a great detail - I love it.   Such a cool idea for this prompt. :)
