Kamiyoki
Kamiyoki are extremely rare type of Japanese that not only have the normal spiritual connection that normal Japanese have, but also have the anomalous quality of housing a kami within them. Typically kami are only able to effect change within certain physical domains their shrines overlook, but kamiyoki act as shrines themselves. Their strong spiritual bond with their bonded kami allows them to harness divine power in excess of what normal Japanese can, and in unique ways. The origin of Kamiyoki is still a mystery, and the fact that they only exist within the lineage of just a few family lines implies there is some sort of heritable origin. The small Kamiyoki community that exists lives austere monastic lives at Iwagata Shrine. They now utilize their special and unique powers to combat the most powerful class of yokai: the shinigami, and especially the inner ring of them: the Kage-Yubi.
Iwagata Shrine
Iwagata Shrine is a remote Shinto shrine on the cliffsides of the mountains in Hokkaido Prefecture. The temple, and the accompanying village in the valley below are populated by a small number of Japanese called "Kamiyoki", who have the mental and spiritual capacity to bond with Kami. These Kami are typically former mortals of Iwagata village, and are bonded to a bloodline of Kamiyoki. Once the host passes away, the Kami will bond to the next born of that bloodline. This means that while every Kamiyoki has the capacity to receive a kami, not every one is actually bonded with one, and will often skip generations. It is tradition in Iwagata that those Kamiyoki that are bonded with a Kami will enter monastic life at the temple so that they may harness their bond with their Kami for the pursuit of wisdom, and in preparation to fight the mortal enemies of the Kamiyoki, the shinigami.
