Kamuy Hunter

Kamuy Hunter

The Path of the Kamuy Hunter is inspired by the Ainu people of Hokkaido, Japan—a culture deeply connected with nature and the kamuy (spirits) believed to inhabit all things. Rangers of this archetype embrace the Ainu tradition of respectful hunting, spiritual reverence, and harmony with the natural world. These hunters not only pursue game but also act as intermediaries between the mortal world and the spirit realm, invoking the aid of animal spirits to protect their community and honor nature. Kamuy Hunters are expert survivalists, known for their tracking skills and mastery of the bow, but their unique strength lies in their spiritual connection with animal spirits. They live according to a sacred bond with these spirits, calling upon their blessings and abilities in combat and exploration. Whether hunting for food, defending their homeland, or warding off malevolent beings, the Kamuy Hunter blends skillful precision with spiritual wisdom.

Path of the Kamuy Hunter Spell List

Your connection with the spirits allows you to cast spells that reflect their blessings. You gain access to the following additional spells at the appropriate levels. These spells are always prepared and do not count against the number of spells you can prepare.
  • 3rd Hunter's Mark, Speak with Animals
  • 5th Lesser Restoration, Pass without Trace
  • 9th Water Breathing, Spirit Guardians
  • 13th Freedom of Movement, Guardian of Nature
  • 17th Commune with Nature, Greater Restoration
  •

    Spirit Bond

At 3rd level, you form a sacred connection with an animal spirit, known as a kamuy, which grants you supernatural abilities. Choose one of the following Spirit Bonds, reflecting the kind of animal spirit that guides you:
  • Bear Spirit (Kita Kamuy). The Bear spirit grants you toughness and ferocity. You gain +1 hit point per ranger level, and when you hit a creature with a melee attack, you can push it back 5 feet.
  • Owl Spirit (Kotankor Kamuy). The Owl spirit grants insight and wisdom. You gain darkvision out to 60 feet, and you have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks relying on sight.
  • Wolf Spirit (Horkew Kamuy). The Wolf spirit blesses you with speed and coordination. Your movement speed increases by 10 feet, and when an ally within 5 feet of you makes a melee attack, you can use your reaction to make a melee weapon attack against the same target.
  •     You can perform a short ritual at the end of a long rest to change your Spirit Bond to another animal spirit.

    Ritual of the Hunt

Also at 3rd level, you can invoke a ritual prayer before the hunt to attune yourself to the spirits around you. As a bonus action, you can choose a creature type or a specific creature that you have encountered before (such as a band of raiders or a particular predator). For the next hour, you gain the following benefits against creatures of the chosen type or the chosen target:
  • Advantage on Wisdom (Survival) checks to track them.
  • Advantage on attack rolls made against the chosen target if they are at full hit points.
  • Damage dealt by your weapon attacks ignores resistance to nonmagical damage.
  •     You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, regaining all uses after a long rest.

    Kamuy’s Blessing

At 7th level, your connection to the spirits deepens, and they offer guidance in times of need. When you make an ability check, attack roll, or saving throw, you can invoke the spirits to gain advantage on the roll. You can decide to use this feature after the roll but before the outcome is determined.     You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum of 1), regaining all expended uses after a long rest.     Additionally, you gain resistance to cold damage and do not suffer any penalties from traveling or resting in extreme cold environments.

    Spirit Arrow

At 11th level, you learn to imbue your ranged attacks with spiritual power. When you hit a creature with a ranged weapon attack, you can choose to unleash a Spirit Arrow, calling forth the force of your guiding animal spirit. The attack deals an additional 2d8 damage, and the effect varies depending on your current Spirit Bond:
  • Bear Spirit: The target must succeed on a Strength saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier) or be knocked prone.
  • Owl Spirit: The target’s speed is halved until the end of your next turn, and the attack does not provoke opportunity attacks if you move away from the target.
  • Wolf Spirit: You can immediately move up to half your movement speed without provoking opportunity attacks. Additionally, an ally within 5 feet of the target can use their reaction to make a melee attack against the same creature.
  •     You can use Spirit Arrow a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, regaining all uses after a long rest.

    Avatar of the Kamuy

At 15th level, your bond with the spirits reaches its pinnacle. You can channel the power of your chosen Spirit Bond to become an Avatar of the Kamuy, gaining extraordinary abilities for 1 minute. As a bonus action, you transform, gaining the following benefits based on your Spirit Bond:
  • Bear Spirit: You gain temporary hit points equal to half your maximum hit points, and you have advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws. While transformed, your weapon attacks deal additional damage equal to your Wisdom modifier.
  • Owl Spirit: You gain blindsight out to 30 feet and can cast the spell Greater Invisibility on yourself once without using a spell slot. Additionally, you have advantage on Dexterity saving throws.
  • Wolf Spirit: Your movement speed increases by 20 feet, and you can take the Dash action as a bonus action. When you hit a creature with a melee attack, you can force it to make a Constitution saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier) or be stunned until the end of your next turn.
  •     Once you use Avatar of the Kamuy, you cannot do so again until you complete a long rest.
