Uniform and Equiptment

The uniforms and equipment of the Army infantry and Officers, and the Navy marines and officers are identical except with regards to the color scheme of their uniforms. The Army uses a green tinted khaki color, while the Navy uses Navy Blue during autumn and winter time, and Navy White during spring and summer.

Enlisted Infantry Uniform

[bHelmet - The standard issue Japanese helmet has an olive finish, and will display the star of the IJA on the front. Inside the helmet are straps to allow the helmet to sit securely on the head and an additional chin strip for added stability.   Field Cap - When not in combat, soldiers wear a cloth field cap displaying the star emblem of the IJA   Undershirt - Composing the main clothing set is a white sleeveless (warm climate) or black long sleeved (cold climate) undershirt   Jacket - The jacket for enlisted personnel is a high collared 5 button jacket that goes down to the upper thigh. The jacket has 2 pockets on the chest, 2 pockets on the waist, and rank and unit insignia on the shoulder tabs, cuffs, and collar.   Breeches - Loose fitting pants with 2 pockets, a belt, and a stripe(s) down the sides indicating rank. The pants go down to just below the knee, and are covered the rest of the way down by gaiters.   Gaiters - A tight fitting canvas covering for the lower legs. These gaiters are white and have buttons to fasten them in the sides. The gaiters start just below the knee and come down to cover over the ankle region.   Socks - Black socks   Enlisted Field Shoes - Brown leather shoes that come up over the ankles. The shoes are lace up, and have hobnails on the bottom to increase traction.   Armband - Goes over the left upper arm, and indicates the role the soldier performs.   Belts and Pouches - A main brown leather belt is tightened over the waist with a gold buckle with the insignia of their branch. An additional thinner belt is clipped onto the main belt upon the front and back and slung over the left shoulder underneath the shoulder tab. Upon the main belt multiple pouches are looped through, including 2 ammunition pouches, a pouch for cleaning equipment, and a bayonet holder.   Field Backpack - A brown canvas backpack that is used to carry additional equipment. A soldier might need when in the field. The backpack is dropped when the soldier is in combat. The backpack is not used or equipped when on base where all the resources they need will be close by. The field backpack is only used for training and exercises, as well as actual operations.   Winter Gear - For cold and snowy environments, soldiers will wear a long fur lined coat, Large winter gloves, a fur lined hat, and large winter boots. This is specialty equipment that is only issued if you are stationed or deployed in an area where it is needed.  

Officer Uniform

Peaked Cap - A tall military dress hat with a gold insignia of branch, and a gold braid over a reflective black brim.   Undershirt - Composing the main clothing set is a white sleeveless (warm climate) or black long sleeved (cold climate) undershirt   Long Jacket - An 8 button, high collar, jacket that hangs down to the lower calves. The jacket has one pocket on the left side of the chest, and 2 more below the hips. Rank and unit insignia is displayed upon the shoulder tabs, cuffs, and above the chest pocket. The collar displays a gold dragon as a symbol of officer status, and from the center of the collar hangs a gold medallion displaying branch.   Riding Breeches - Similar to the enlisted breeches in that they are loose fitting pants with 2 pockets, a belt, and a stripe(s) down the sides indicating rank, and go down to just under the knee. However these officer versions have extra fabric on the sides of the thighs that make using them on horseback easier.   Riding Boots - Brown leather boots made for horse riding that go up to just beneath the knee. The boots do not have laces or buckles, and merely slip on. Attached to the heel is a metal spur for horseback use.   Socks - Black Socks   Armband - Goes over the left upper arm, and indicates the role the officer performs.   Gloves - Brown Leather gloves   Belts and Pouches - A main brown leather belt is tightened over the waist with a gold buckle with the insignia of their branch. An additional thinner belt is clipped onto the main belt upon the front and back and slung over the left shoulder underneath the shoulder tab. Upon the main belt multiple pouches are looped through, including 2 ammunition pouches, a holster, and a pouch for cleaning equipment.   Aguillette - Ornate gold braids that hang over the right shoulder and hang over the right side of the chest and hang onto the third button of the jacket.  

Enlisted Infantry Equipment

Blanket - Used when in the field to sleep   Mess Kit - Eating and food storage equipment for eating while on operations in the field.   Shovel - Used for digging trenches and foxholes.   Rifle - Their standard weapon, a bolt action rifle carried via a sling.   100 Rounds of Ammunition in stripper clips - Standard amount of ammunition carried by a soldier on field operations.   Grenades - The average infantryman carries 2 grenades.   Bayonet - A bayonet that can be easily attached and unattached to the end of one's rifle for close quarters melee fighting.   Cleaning Equipment - Used for routine maintenance of one's weapon.   Canteen - Used to carry water while in the field.  

Officer Equipment

Officer's Katana - A katana specially made and only to be worn by officers in the army and navy. These katanas have a long history of being symbols of power and authority, and are subsequently the most iconic part of their ensemble. They are held by a leather loop holder called a frog that is attached via an adjustable chain to the waist belt.   Flashlight - A new invention that was quickly adopted for use by specifically officers of the Kenpeitai   Binoculars - Because the officers are the ones who most vitally need access to information, it is logical that they have access to   Type 14 Pistol - Few if any officers wield a rifle, but rather rely on their subordinates to carry the heavier firepower. Instead, officers opt for the more low profile pistol which still allows them to exert power and authority without being encumbered.   3, 8 Round Magazines - Used for the Type 52   Cleaning Equipment - Used for routine maintenance of one's weapon.   Maps and compass - Standard navigational equipment needed for planning and movement.   Canteen - When on operations, an officer will carry a canteen to carry water.   Flare Gun - Used for signalling when more sophisticated communication equipment is unavailable.   Handcuffs - Carried by Kenpetai officers in order to subdue suspects and prisoners.   Badge and Credentials - Carried by Kenpeitai officers as proof of their profession and identity.
