Yamabiko
Yamabiko
Hidden among mist-shrouded mountains and deep forests, the Yamabiko are enigmatic beings known for their uncanny ability to mimic sounds. Their voices echo like the calls of birds, the whispers of wind, or even the words of travelers. Often mistaken for illusions or tricks of acoustics, the Yamabiko revel in confusion and subtle mischief. While they are not inherently malicious, their playful nature can unnerve those unfamiliar with their ways. As ancient as the mountains themselves, they live at the edges of civilization, their presence felt more often than seen.
Yamabiko possess an otherworldly charm, their bodies small and agile with features that reflect their attunement to the natural world. Their large ears and wide, reflective eyes make them seem alert and watchful. Some have soft fur that runs down their backs or along their limbs, and their skin tones range from stone gray to moss green, blending effortlessly with their mountainous homes. They are said to carry the spirits of forgotten songs and lost memories, using their mastery of sound to communicate in ways beyond words.
The Yamabiko are wanderers at heart, seeking out new sounds to collect, new stories to mimic, and new mysteries to explore. They rarely stay in one place for long, drawn to the endless symphony of the world around them. While they might frustrate those looking for straightforward answers, those who befriend a Yamabiko gain an ally whose quick wit, agility, and sound-based magic can turn the tide in the trickiest of situations.

Darkvision Booming Voice. Your voice is always under the effect of the Thaumaturgy spell, allowing you to change it within the spells limitations. Perfect Mimcry. As a Yamabiko, you can perfectly mimic any sound, including voices, that you have heard. A creature hearing the mimic must succeed on a Wisdom (Insight) check against your Charisma (Deception) roll to discern that the sound is fake. Echo Interferance. Once per long rest as a reaction, you can mimic an enemy's spellcasting or command. This ability allows you to counterspell a spell of half your proficiency spell level or lower without the need for the Counterspell spell. For spells above this level you can confuse a creature’s verbal command forcing them to cast spell attacks with disadvantage, or giving advantage to the saving throws of those affected by a spell. Mountain Spirit. You have proficiency in Stealth or Survival. Yamabiko are at home in remote places, able to hide in natural environments or find food and water in difficult conditions. Resonant Feedback (3/day). As a reaction when an enemy within 30 feet hits you with a melee or ranged attack, you can emit a jarring echo. The attacker must make a Constitution saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier) or take thunder damage equal to your level and become deafened for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the save at the end of each of its turns, ending the deafened condition on a success. Special Feat: Voice of the Mountains - Yamabiko
