The Kerine Virus

To put it in the most simple of terms, this is the virus that introduced zombies to the world. 
Well, to the United States of America. It did not pass any borders. 
Mainly, due to the fact that other countries made certain that it did not by bombing the states.

The virus is considered extinct now, but the chaos it created is long from forgotton.

Causes

The cause for the Kerine virus is human's trying to play god.  Some scientists decided that if superheros were not going to appear on their own, that they would simply create them. This virus was the outcome of one of the many failed trial rounds of that experiment.

Treatment

There is no treatment. One can die. That is the only way to stop it.

Prognosis

One becomes undead. And then actual dead if they are dealt with.

It spreads through the blood.

History

It originally started off in that little trial room. 
Poor college students signed up to be poked and prodded as test subjects. And some real unlucky group of them got injected with this disease.
The scientists say they had no way of knowing how fast it would spread, and maybe that is true, but fast it was and it did not take long for it to get out of hand. 
What also did not take long was for it to hit the news. Both national and international. 
A handful of other countries came together and decided that they were going to take care of the virus themselves. And their version of "taking care of it" was by bombing a few major cities.

Cultural Reception

The cultural reception of the virus is that it is bad. 
Not only did it create zombies, it also caused a decade long war, which in itself caused several things that ravished the world. 
All because mankind wanted superheros.
