Lacuna

Lacuna is sapient species native to Kestrel. They are roughly humanoid, covered in a thick coat of black fur and a skull-like pattern of fungus on their faces.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Lacunas average between 1.25-2 meters tall. They are covered in a thick coat of dark fur. Their arms are long and end in primate-like grasping hands. Their feet are hoofed much like a mountain goat.
Growing on their faces is a symbiotic species of fungus. Lacunas style the fungus in skull patterns, both to protect their faces and disgust predators. The skulls and fur make it appear as though the Lacuna has already died and rotted.

Genetics and Reproduction

Lacunas reproduce sexually, and gestate around 5 months.

Growth Rate & Stages

An infant Lacuna is given its first “skull mask” upon birth, however, these masks are dead, formerly belonging to Lacuna elders who have passed away. These fake masks help the infant get used to the skull mask tradition.
When the infant begins walking, they are given a special ceremony where new fungus is grow on their face. The pattern of skull usually denotes family affiliation, like a clan symbol. But more progressive parents often mix the features of their own patterns.
During adolescence, Lacunas are taught to farm and climb, but are kept to bottom parts of buildings. With the onset of puberty, some Lacunas consider an adolescent scaling an entire building a rite of passage.

Ecology and Habitats

Lacunas are omnivorous, though mostly rely on farming. Using their long arms and hoofed feet, they’re able to grow gardens and farms on ruined buildings of Kestrel. Plants that need only partial sunlight are kept in vertical gardens that cling to the steep, cliff like walls. While grains and cereals are grown on the rooftops. There are few cases of animal husbandry, as Lacuna will go on ritual hunts a few times a year.

Behaviour

Lacunas live in small settlements, usually farming the buildings of a street or two. Because of the ritualized nature of their hunts, they tend to have larger ranges that can extend up to 10 blocks. They typically do not fight with their neighbors, but they do prefer to keep to their family groups.
For larger matters and gatherings, genetically similar tribes will get together into larger nations. There are 22 nations of Lacunas within Kestrel, each corresponding with one of the 22 planar districts.
