The Foundation of Thay
The Melderyni kings have always been well informed of events on Harn. Although they have seldom taken direct action, their influence often appears in Harnic history. Such is the case with the Aleathian Odyssey.
The collapse of the Corani Empire meant that Aleath would not long escape the attention of the bloodthirsty Tekhosian theocrats. When it was besieged in 569, plans were begun by Rolin and Taryn of Melesen, two mercantyler brothers who had emigrated from Cherafir to Aleath in 552. There is evidence to suggest that the Melesens were dispatched by the Melderyni throne in anticipation of this very threat, although that would assume almost two decades of foreknowledge.
One month before the city fell, 400 adults and most children under the age of 12 sailed from the city. After suffering heavily from foul weather, the refugees gathered at Keboth Island, where they met Genin, a Melderyni mage who led them through the Indatha Straits to the Horka River estuary. King Poleryn gave the refugees a charter to establish the freetown of Thay. The town quickly became the dominant economic force in the mainland possessions of Melderyn, superseding Harden, the old capital of Elorinar. This continues to cause some stress between the city and the Earl of Elorin.
Following the founding of Thay, communications and land-based trade with the rest of Harn improved. A trail was blazed from Laket to Kobing in Kaldor in 575, and caravans began to pass regularly along it. Although it was called the Genin Trail, the mage's connection with it is unknown.
