Kellan Greyholt

Kellan grew up in a humble household in Waterdeep. His parents were simple craftspeople who worked their way into an early grave much thanks to unfair levies imposed by the more privileged denizens of Waterdeep. Kellan swore he would forge a better future for himself where he didn't need to toil for a few scraps. This mentality of shortcuts inevitably led him to gambling and thus started a long, winding and meandering road of fortunes found and lost. But mostly lost.
Needing skills to survive under such "competitive" conditions he tricked famous swordsman and adventurer Messalo Andares to take him under his wing and teach him how to fight and survive. Andares, well into his retirement, feared for his legacy to die out. He wanted a new generation of valiant heroes to continue his work and Kellan was perfectly content to let the old man think so as long as he taught the necessary skills. The old man would eventually die, unceremoniously, in a two-bit bar brawl a few years after he and Kellan parted ways. He never took on another apprentice; rumor had it his previous apprentice had been a disappointment and broken his heart. He never recovered from it.
Kellan's quick wit and apparent trustworthy demeanor coupled with dubious morality opened doors that would otherwise be closed to him. Had he the common sense to see the dangers inherent in such endeavors he would have stayed his course, but alas that was not to be. He was eventually indebted to the Zhentarim; a nefarious organization of people who knew how to use such predicaments to their advantage. Kellan became their errand boy to go where they pointed much to his chagrin. But that changed, however, with his journey to Phandalin where he, incidentally, carved out a hero's path for himself and became a founding member of the Cobalt Vanguard; a heroic party devoted to protecting the weak and battling evil. Kellan was sure his tumultuous past was behind him and that there would be no further consequences...
