Celestial Dial

Purpose / Function

By all appearances the Celestial Dial is identical to an enormous sun dial, and many on their first examination make the reasonable assumption that it was intended to serve the same purpose and mark time in the days of the Giants. This theory runs into several inconsistencies when the structure is examined more closely, most notably that it is neither the correct proportions nor the appropriate orientation so the shadow neither align with the markings on the disk nor completes a full revolution. In recent years significant effort has been expended attempting to translate the runes that run around its edges, but as of yet no definitive progress has been made, so no explanation has been forthcoming from that direction.

Alterations

Not even the Shattering was enough to damage the Celestial Dial, and what few additions have been attempted over the eras were each short lived. Too little knowledge remains of its ancient origins, but any alterations must have occurred when its creators still held dominion, and have since been lost. There is in fact a local superstition that attempting to add to the relic, or even build too close to it, courts doom.

Architecture

Like many of the ancient works of the giants, the Celestial Dial is rooted in its environment that at first glance it can appear to be a natural formation, but once further examination is made and its artifice is realized it becomes obvious and inexplicable that it was ever mistaken. The actual material used in the construction of the Celestial Dial appears to be unique. Though it is visually similar to many grey stones, it's texture is almost more akin to overstuffed upholstery and its durability is nearly without peer for something which is by all appearances magically inert.
