Queen Mirabella Bloodscale (a.k.a. The Stern)

The mobs were fading alongside the famine, but Queen Mirabella still lived in fear: of the commoners who had mortally wounded her father Arald III; of the nobles who surely schemed to finish off her bloodline. This fear made her a peacekeeper, albeit one using authority to push for her choices; they called her “Mirabella the Stern”.

Near the start of her reign, she received military support from a captain fleeing Kirth, then handed over the refugee for a large sum -leaving the Kingdom better-off and better-armed.

Her guidance also left it too verdant and stable for schemes to gain traction... except the East's.

The Queen was shocked to learn a demon was to “take care” of her once the Counts had eroded the realm's faith. Not even St. Umber's exhumation slowed them down: they had Quayle University study the body, and the agnostic scholars smote by the relic were replaced by heretic Tavallinese professors too brilliant to be fired. The Kingdom thrived, but the miracle had spread blasphemy. The Church could not undo the damage.

Yet the Queen had another preoccupation: a deep investigation into a Patrician's murder exposed a great Southern conspiracy aiming to steal Eastern farmland with forged deeds. Civil war was at hand.

Unwilling to risk being caught in a cover-up, Mirabella told the truth to The Council, but pushed for a plea bargain. The Council grudgingly agreed, and a man thought to be Grandee Gabriel Steel took the fall for his co-conspirators. Chaos was averted, this time.

Alas, the conspiracy proved a fatal distraction from the Eastern scheme, which Lord Patrician Redding Guilder -brother-in-law to claimant Zhoya Bonworth- helped along.

A demon nested within Mirabella's mind, puppeting her into tyranny. For crumbs of freedom, the Queen left the reins of power to “advisor” Zhoya. When the royal body died, the Kingdom crowned the one who had so wisely “worked around the senile despot”.

Sternness had not saved her.
