International Vampire Code

Purpose

The International Vampire Code was created to help preserve vampire safety and culture. It was inspired by increases in anti-vampire attacks among humans throughout the world, in order to protect vampires as much as possible.

Document Structure

Clauses

The first section of the Code deals with feeding in human population centers. This is to ensure vampires are less likely to be observed or harmed when feeding. They must obtain consent from humans they wish to feed from and follow human laws about age of majority. This is due to the arousing effect vampire venom has on humans. Vampires also must ensure they do not feed so much off one human that the human dies. This is because that much blood is not needed, and finding dead bodies drained of blood causes anti-vampire fear in areas where it happens. Vampires also must feed in safe locations where they will be less likely to be found by concerned witnesses.

The next section deals with other methods of feeding. It outlines the proper method of human keeping, an outdated system by which human families were kept at vampire households to serve as employees and sources of blood. As this was considered akin to slavery in many cases, it has since been outlawed. Vampires are instead encouraged to develop relationships with humans that are more mutually beneficial. Keeping of animal livestock is permitted, the expectations of which are outlined in the Code. The Code also outlines the rules for the practice of blood dealers and feeding clubs. Blood dealers collect and sell blood to vampires who don't wish to live feed or keep their own animals for blood. Feeding clubs allow vampires to interact with humans who want to feed them.

The Code also sets expectations for humans who have been with vampires to ensure no truths of vampire culture make it into popular media such as books, movies, and TV shows. It also tells vampires how to interact with the Mortal Protection Agency when needed, and how punishments will be handled.

Publication Status

Copies of the Code are available to all vampires upon request.

Legal status

The Code is the binding legal code of vampire society across the world.

Historical Details

Public Reaction

Most vampires have welcomed the Code as a means to protect themselves. The only public outcry against the Code came from its outlawing of human keeping, which resulted in the Consilium Internationale allowing a gradual implementation of the law.
